Celebrate This Holiday Season @ your Library
The Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) will offer something for everyone during the 2014 Holiday Season - free programs and events statewide - ranging from special Holiday-themed Storytimes and craft activities, Christmas Concerts, Performances and Movies, to visits with Santa Claus. Young children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Contact the hosting library as soon as possible for more information or if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed. Programs and events are subject to change:

* November 29 - "Christmas Movies," at Waikiki-Kapahulu Public Library (ph. 733-8488): 1:30 p.m. - How the Grinch Stole Christmas, (1966 animated version featuring the voice of Boris Karloff); 2:30 p.m. - The Muppets Christmas Carol. These movies are suitable for all ages.
* December 1-17 - "Festival of Snowflakes Contest," Aiea Public Library (ph. 483-7333): Keiki grade 6 and younger are invited to enter this contest using creativity to decorate a paper snowflake. Winners will receive prizes; all entries will be displayed in the Library. Visit the Library to pick up a Snowflake entry form; last day to enter the contest is December 17. See the winning Snowflakes at the Library on December 18.

* December 1-22 - "Christmas Tree Ornament Contest," Ewa Beach Public & School Library (ph. 689-1204): Submit a Christmas ornament no larger than 4" x 4" x 4" not made from breakable materials such as glass through December 12. Ornaments will be displayed on the Library's bulletin board; photos will be posted on the Friends of Ewa Beach Library (event sponsor) Facebook page. Vote for your favorite ornament from December 15-19 by filling out a ballot at the Library or "liking" a photo on the Friends' Facebook page. Enter contest in 3 ornament categories: adult, teen, and children (ages 5 and older). Winners announced on December 22; prizes include gift cards.
* December 2 - "Make-an-Angel Craft Class," 1 p.m. at Aina Haina Public Library (Meeting Room; ph. 377-2456): The Lei Ilima Club will demonstrate how to make angels out of recyclable paper bags for table centerpieces, tree toppers, ornaments, gift-wrapping accents, or home decoration. All craft materials will be provided by the Lei Ilima Club. This class is for adults, teens, and keiki ages 8 and older. Registration is recommended; call the Library or sign-up at the reference desk. Walk-ins will be accepted if space is available. \

* December 2 - "Holiday Ideas Demonstration," 6 p.m. at Ewa Beach Public & School Library (ph. 689-1204): Palisades Family and Community Education (FCE) Club volunteers will demonstrate how to make simple and economical gifts, decorations, and food ideas for Christmas. Learn to make three Christmas idea items and three recipes. The Friends of Ewa Beach Public Library is sponsoring this event for adults.
* December 3 - "Polar Express Viewing Party," 5:45 p.m. at Waianae Public Library (ph. 697-7868): Keiki ages 3 and older and invited to see The Polar Express, a heart-warming, motion capture, computer-animated movie based on the popular children's book by Chris Van Allsburg, and featuring the voice of Tom Hanks. Movie is rated G; free refreshments and surprises.
* December 4 - "A Magical Christmas Time," 10:30 a.m. at Aina Haina Public Library (Children's Section; ph. 377-2456): Join The Fairy Grandmother (Susie Roth) for Christmas stories, magic, puppets, and songs. The Friends of the Aina Haina Public Library is sponsoring this event; suitable for ages 3 and older. In addition, The Fairy Grandmother will perform: December 11, 10:30 a.m. at Kaneohe Public Library (ph. 233-5676) for ages 2 to 8; sponsored by the Friends of Kaneohe Public Library; and at Kailua Public Library (ph. 266-9911) on December 13 at 10:30 a.m. for ages 3 and older; sponsored by the Friends of Kailua Public Library.
* December 4 - "Mililani High School Glee Club Christmas Concert," 10:30 a.m. at Mililani Public Library (ph. 627-7470): The Mililani High School Glee Club, under the direction of Chorus Master Keane Ishii, will perform a selection of holiday season songs. This program is suitable for all ages.

* December 6 - "The Slack Key Artistry of Jeff Peterson," 10:30 a.m. at Hawaii Kai Public Library (ph. 397-5833): multiple Grammy Award-winning Hawaiian Slack Key Guitarist Jeff Peterson will present a special Holiday performance. Peterson, who is also the recipient of several Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, is recognized as one of Hawaii's most versatile musicians. This program is suitable for all ages, produced by the UH-Manoa Outreach College's Statewide Cultural Extension Program, and sponsored by the Friends of the Hawaii Kai Public Library.
* December 6 - "Karol's Karolers Christmas Concert," 11:30 a.m. at Hawaii State Library (Lobby; ph. 586-3499). This seasonal a cappella group, composed of members of well-known Oahu church choirs, will perform traditional as well as new Christmas songs. In addition, Karol's Karolers will perform on December 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Ewa Beach Public & School Library (ph. 689-1204; sponsored by The Friends of Ewa Beach Public Library). These concerts are suitable for all ages.
* December 6 - "Festive Mr. Fox: Felt Craft Program," 3 p.m. at Hawaii State Library (Art, Music & Recreation Section, 2nd Floor; ph. 586-3520): Adults are invited to hand sew a small felt figure suitable as a seasonal ornament. All materials will be supplied. To reserve a seat: sign up at the Art, Music & Recreation Reference Desk or call the Library. Walk-ins are welcome until the table is full.
* Starting December 6 - "Winter Break Family Activities" at Hawaii State Library (Edna Allyn Room for Children; ph. 586-3510): Children's Story & Craft Time: every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for ages 3 and older; Puzzle Time on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. for ages 2 to 5: December 22, 29 and January 5, 2015; Craft Time on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. for ages 4 to 12 (age 7 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver): December 23, 30 and January 6, 2015.
* December 6 - "Christmas Craft Party," 10:30 a.m. at McCully-Moiliili Public Library (ph. 973-1099): The Kaimuki High School Art Club will demonstrate how to make a candy cane reindeer, a Christmas wreath, and learn how to decorate your own Santa's list. This event is suitable for ages 10 and younger (Ages 6 and younger must be accompanied by an adult).
* December 9 - "Melemai Kapu'uwaimai Christmas Concert," 6:30 p.m. at Kapolei Public Library (Lobby; ph. 693-7050): The vocal ensemble Melemai Kapu'uwaimai, under the direction of Marilyn Kim, will perform a concert of Holiday Season music. The Friends of the Library Kapolei is sponsoring the event; suitable for all ages.
* December 10 - "Hula Honeys Holiday Concert," 6:30 p.m. at Makawao Public Library (ph. 573-8785): The Na Hoku Hano Hano Award-winning Hula Honeys-Ginger Johnson and Robyn Kneubuhl-blend vintage Hapa Haole songs with hip jazz classics to create a swinging sweet sound all their own. In addition, the Hula Honeys will perform December 18, 6:30 p.m. at Wailuku Public Library (ph. 243-5766). The Maui Friends of the Library is sponsoring these one-hour performances suitable for all ages.
* December 11 - "Merry and Bright - A Holidays Celebration in Stories and Song," 10 a.m. at Makawao Public Library (ph. 573-8785) featuring storytellers Peter and Melinda Wing. This 45-minute program of holiday season stories, songs, and humor is especially for keiki ages 3 and older. In addition, the Wings will perform this program at five other Maui County libraries: December 12, 10:30 a.m. at Lanai Public & School Library (ph. 565-7920); December 17, 10 a.m. at Wailuku Public Library (ph. 243-5766); December 18, 1 p.m. at Hana Public & School Library (ph. 248-4848); December 19, 10:30 a.m. at Kihei Public Library (ph. 875-6833); and December 20, 10:30 a.m. at Kahului Public Library (ph. 873-3097). The Maui Friends of the Library is sponsoring this special Holiday Season program.
* December 11 - "Celebrate the Holidays with Puppet Times," 10:30 a.m. at Aina Haina Public Library (Children's Section; ph. 377-2456): Puppeteer Christy Lipps will present favorite children's Holiday Season stories in a lively puppet show featuring beautifully hand-crafted puppets and songs. The Friends of the Aina Haina Public Library is sponsoring this event. In addition, Christy Lipps will perform: December 16, 6:30 p.m. at Kapolei Public Library (Children's Section; ph. 693-7050) followed by an appearance by Santa and his Elf. The Friends of the Library Kapolei is sponsoring this event; bring a camera for a photo op with Santa; December 17, 10:30 a.m. at Ewa Beach Public & School Library (ph. 689-1204); sponsored by The Friends of Ewa Beach Public Library; and at Kaneohe Public Library (ph. 233-5676) on December 18, 10:30 a.m.; sponsored by the Friends of Kaneohe Public Library.
* December 13 - "Holiday Read Aloud" at Waipahu Public Library (ph. 675-0358): UH-West Oahu students will perform a holiday season read aloud with free crafts, cookies, and lucky drawings for prizes: 10:30 a.m. - Read aloud Sandi Takayama's "The Musubi Man: Hawaii's Gingerbread Man;" 11 a.m. - Craft activities: Reindeer and Santa Hats (for all ages), Christmas-themed Bookmarks (for ages 5 and older), Reindeer Ornaments (for ages 6 and older); 11:50 a.m. - Cookies and Lucky Drawings for Prizes. The National Education Association/West Oahu, HSTA, and Waipahu Public Library are sponsoring this event.
* December 13 - "Honolulu Handbell Ensemble Christmas Concert," noon at Hawaii State Library (Lobby; 586-3520): The Honolulu Handbell Ensemble, directed byAnne Craig Lum, will perform music and songs for the Holiday Season. The concert will also feature violinist Sheryl Shohet, sopranos Donna Nanod Shaver and Mei Li Wang, and the Kapiolani Community College Synthesizer Ensemble. The Hawaii State Library is sponsoring this event which is suitable for ages 5 and older.
* December 16 - "Santa Storytime," 3 p.m. at Kahului Public Library (ph. 873-3097): Keiki ages 2 and older are invited to a special 45-minute storytime featuring Santa reading books of the Holiday Season. This Santa Storytime will also be presented at Makawao Public Library (ph. 573-8785) on December 18 at 10 a.m. The Maui Friends of the Library is sponsoring these special storytimes.
* December 18 - "Winter Holiday Storytime," 3 p.m. at Waikiki-Kapahulu Public Library (ph. 733-8488): Keiki ages 6 and under are invited to experience stories, songs, finger plays, and make a simple craft to take home.
* December 20 - "Christmas Storytime," 10 a.m. at Waialua Public Library (ph. 637-8286): Keiki of all ages are invited to hear holiday season stories, make an ornament craft, and receive special treats.
* December 20 - "Christmas Movies" at Waikiki-Kapahulu Public Library (ph. 733-8488): 1 p.m. - The Nightmare Before Christmas, directed by Tim Burton; rated PG (parental guidance is suggested); 2:30 p.m. - Elf, starring Will Ferrell; rated PG. These movies are suitable for ages 7 and older.
* December 20 - "Santa's Workshop," 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Waianae Public Library (ph. 697-7868): Enjoy holiday season stories and music; make-and-take home ornaments and Christmas cards. This event is suitable for all ages.
* December 22 - "Christmas Movie Marathon," 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ewa Beach Public & School Library (ph. 689-1204): Enjoy a break from the stress-filled holiday season by seeing free screenings of recent Christmas movies as well as classics including: Arthur Christmas, A Christmas Carol, Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Elf, and The Polar Express.

Library Cards
You may apply for a library card at any Hawaii public library. The initial card is FREE for Hawaii residents. Cards are also free for military personnel and their dependents with a copy of orders. The resident card replacement fee is $5.00. Resident library cards must be renewed every five years. There is no charge for the renewal.
