Jazz "Queen of Swing" Lenore Raphael Plays the Atherton Jan. 17

A Steinway Concert Jazz Artist and award-winning jazz composer and clinician, Lenore Raphael brings her swinging arrangements of standards from the Great American Songbook and a few of her originals to Hawai‘i Public Radio's Atherton Studio on Saturday, January 17. Raphael has been called "Queen of Swing" and "simply one of the best pianists in the jazz mainstream" by jazz writer John Gilbert (AllAboutJazz.com). Many of the tunes she'll be performing were recorded by great jazz pianist Oscar Peterson. She is accompanied at the Atherton by California-based guitarist Doug MacDonald.

Tickets for this first-class evening of jazz at the Atherton are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. Reservations may be made at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawai‘i Public Radio, 738 Kaheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

About the artists

Lenore Raphael was born in New York City and started performing at the age of 7. As a teenage prodigy in classical music at Manhattan's High School of Music & Art, she made her debut at Carnegie Hall. She went on to New York University and received her bachelor of arts degree in music, but gave up a career as a music teacher and switched to playing jazz professionally after hearing Oscar Peterson in concert. She studied jazz piano with Barry Harris and Mike Longo.

Raphael's internationally acclaimed performances include major jazz festivals and venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center, Blue Note Jazz Festival, Ottawa Jazz Festival, Jazz in the Sangres, Birdland, Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club (London), the S.S. Oosterdam Floating Jazz Festival, Joy of Jazz Festival (Johannesburg, South Africa), Broward Center For the Arts (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), and many more.

Her tribute tune to Oscar Peterson following his death (Blues for OP) premièred at a memorial concert for Peterson at the International Association for Jazz Convention in Toronto. Her new CD Love Notes is a tribute to Peterson.

She has released 10 CDs on her own record label Swingin' Fox. Her CD Class Act received "top pick" for international releases for 2009 on the Canadian Radio network and the BBC network. She has won ASCAP awards for her original compositions, which appear on her own CDs and other artists'. They have been played on Continental Airlines in-flight jazz stream, and on jazz stations worldwide. Her 2006 recording "Invitation" and 2012 recording "Loverly" were up for Grammy nominations.

As a jazz teacher and clinician, Raphael has done jazz master classes at universities, conservatories, and performing art centers around the world. She was featured in the Steinway Magazine (Fall 2012) as a top Steinway artist and teacher. Her jazz theory book Jazz Master Class was published by Hansen House Music.

Raphael has her own radio show Lenore Raphael's JazzSpot on www.purejazzradio.com, where she has interviewed and performed with some of the top jazz artists today. Along the way she has performed and recorded with such greats as Clark Terry, Warren Vache, Howard Alden, Harry Allen, Bucky Pizzarelli, Jack Wilkins, and more.

Guitarist Doug MacDonald's reputation extends from the east to the west coast where he now resides. As a guest artist and in various leader settings, he has appeared at Carnegie Hall, at clubs in New York, Chicago, and his native Philadelphia, as well as in Barcelona, Spain and Honolulu. He also merited recurring spots on three of L.A.'s most well-known jazz festivals.

Doug has recorded with such greats as Ross Tompkins, Ray Brown, Jake Hanna, Hank Jones, Jack Sheldon, Bob Cooper, Art Hillary, Johnny Kirkwood, Plas Johnson, Snooky Young, Bill Holman, the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Lorez Alexandria, and Ray Anthony, among others.
