UH Wind Ensemble & UH Symphony Band

The UH Wind Ensemble, Jeffrey Boeckman, conductor, will perform Shostakovich's Festive Overture, Holst's Hammersmith, Weill's Threepennymusik, and Ian Dicke's Song of the Telegraph (composer Ian Dicke will be in residence).
The UH Symphony Band, David Blon, conductor, will perform Windsprints by Richard Saucedo, English Dances: Set I, Op. 27 by Malcolm Arnold (arr. Maurice Johnstone), O Magnum Mysterium by Morten Lauridsen, King Cotton by John Phillip Sousa (Daryl Agena, guest conductor), and With Heart and Voice by David R. Gillingham.
Tickets $12 general admission; $8 seniors, UH faculty/staff/students; $5 UHM music majors

Singer-Pianist masterclass with Timothy Long and Christopher Dylan Herbert

Renowned vocal coach and conductor, Timothy Long (Stony Brook University) and 2-time Grammy nominated New York Polyphony member Christopher Dylan Herbert present a masterclass that focuses on the singer-pianist relationship. Four pairs of UH students will have the opportunity to work with these stellar artists, while the public is encouraged to attend for free!

UH Guitar Concert Series: Benny Chong, Byron Yasui, and Noel Okimoto

The UH Guitar Concert Series concludes with jazz ‘ukulele master Benny Chong, with Byron Yasui, bass, and Noel Okimoto, drums.
Benny Chong is a founding member of The Aliis, a group that, together with Don Ho, rose to international fame in the 1960s. A highly respected regular on Hawaii's professional music circuit, Benny has taken jazz ‘uke playing to a level which will be very difficult to surpass. The musical challenges of his repertoire, his technical abilities, and his harmonic, melodic and rhythmic sense are on par with the best jazz musicians in the world. Noted musicians who hear him for the first time walk away in awe.

The Ernest Chang Piano Studio and the UHM Music Department present husband and wife pianists Tong-Il Han and Helen Lee in a recital in memory of Hawaii's internationally recognized piano technician, Yoshihisa Nishimura.
Pianist Tong-Il Han has distinguished himself as a performer, recording artist, and educator in a musical career spanning over 50 years. He has performed with major orchestras throughout the USA, Europe, and Asia, and collaborated with many noted conductors, including Bernard Haitink, Herbert Blomstedt, Edo de Waart, Raphael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Charles Dutoit, Lukas Foss, Eugene Jochum, Raymond Leppard, Robert Shaw, Stanislaw Skrowaczeski, and David Zinman.
As both concert artist and teacher Tong-Il Han draws deeply on his Korean roots and Western musical heritage. For many years his foremost commitment has been to engender the artistic and humanistic development of the next generation of artists, teachers, and audiences in many parts of the world.
Helen Lee has studied piano performance with renowned musicians such as Leon Fleisher, Steven Bishop Kovachevich, James Tocco, Michel Block, Pamela Paul, and Vladimir Viardo. Her concert career covers cities in the USA, Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Singapore and Mexico, including as a guest soloist with the Seoul Juenesse Orchestra, the University of North Texas Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and Daegu Philharmonic Orchestra.
