An Evening of Intimate Soul with Maryanne Ito, Atherton Studio, June 6
Hawaiʻi Public Radio hosts up-and-coming neo-soul singer/songwriter Maryanne Ito in her Atherton Studio debut on Saturday, June 6th. Likened to Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, Ito combines a soulful jazz style with R&B and hip hop. In her Atherton concert, she performs music from her debut album "Waking Up" with Bigg John Akapo (guitar), Ely the Producer (keyboards), Christian Legaspi (bass), and JayDrums (percussion).
"Waking Up" jumped to #4 on the Official UK Chart a few weeks after its release and is a Na Hōkū Hanohano nominee for Best R&B album. Ito says of her first album, "This is my introduction to a world that involves more of what I'm passionate about. The title track ‘Waking Up' is a reminder to myself to truly live outside the mundane."
Ito is also one of the finalists in the Peoples Choice Best Pacific Artist category in the Vodafone Pacific Music Awards. A week after her Atherton concert, she will be departing for the VPMA ceremony in Auckland, New Zealand. She embarks immediately after on her first European tour, during which she will perform with one of the top soul/jazz bands from Holland and in world-class venues, such as The Jazz Cafe in London, Bizz'Art in Paris, and Sugarfactory in Amsterdam.
Tickets to HPR's evening of intimate soul with Maryanne Ito are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. Reservations may be made at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.
