Dion "Boogie" Scott Sings Hendrix, Singing Dylan June 20 in the Atherton

In his ninth appearance in HPR's Atherton Studio on June 20th, soulful blues vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Dion Scott, a.k.a. "Boogie," takes his inspiration from a Jimi Hendrix quote. Said Hendrix in Beat International in 1969: "Sometimes I do a Dylan song and it seems to fit me so right that I figure maybe I wrote it. Dylan didn't always do it for me as a singer, not in the early days, but then I started listening to the lyrics. That sold me."

Tickets to "Boogie Sings Hendrix, Singing Dylan" on Saturday, June 20th are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. Reservations may be made at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

A familiar voice to local blues fans, Boogie's past Atherton concerts have featured his own original tunes, a tribute to Muddy Waters, and an evening devoted to the music of Eric Clapton. For his June 20th program of Hendrix covers of Bob Dylan songs, he will be joined by guitarist Mark Pearlman, Josh Guerra on percussion, and a "mysterious stranger" on blues harp.

About the artist

Dion Scott was born in 1967 in Landstuhl, Germany into a musical family. His father, Ronnie Scott, played piano for a group called "The Quintones" and performed on the same stage as Motown greats Sam Cook and Otis Redding. Dion got his first guitar at 10; however, it was not until his high school years and hours spent listening to Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Cream, that he began playing in earnest. He moved to O‘ahu in 1989 and started gigging at the North Shore restaurant Steamers, playing mostly covers, rarely singing. After hearing Eric Clapton's Unplugged album, he left Steamers for The Coffee Gallery, where he was allowed to perform acoustic blues. Since then he has become a revered bluesman, opening for legends like B.B. King, Taj Mahal, The Derek Trucks Band, Johnny Winter, and Earth, Wind, & Fire, as well as performing at private events, in night clubs and recording studios. He appears regularly at the Koko Marina Kona Brewing Company and Morning Brew Coffee House and Bistro in Kailua. Boogie is a musician by night and an elementary school teacher by day.
