Bluesman Rick Smith and the Trailer Park Romeos Bring the Blues

to HPR's Atherton Studio, June 27

Slide guitarist and vocalist Rick Smith, along with the Trailer Park Romeos, leads a Blues pilgrimage from the Delta to Chicago in HPR's Atherton Performing Arts Studio on Saturday, June 27. For the first half of the evening, Smith plays the music of the Mississippi Delta circa late 1920s, a style characterized by plaintive vocals, guitar picking, and harmonica accompaniment. In the second half, he is joined by the Trailer Park Romeos for songs representing the raucous, urban Chicago Blues, made famous by the early 1950s recordings of Muddy Waters, Lil' Walter, and Howlin' Wolf.

Tickets are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. Reservations may be made at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Trailer Park Romeos, led by Rick Smith, is comprised of Captain Larry Spalding -- harmonica, Ian Chames -- bass, Sean Harrison -- guitar, Paul "Mojo" Gomes -- drums, and Nia -- percussion. Their June 27th Atherton concert will include anecdotes and background on specific lyrics, musical techniques, and the characters who brought the blues from the Delta to the Southside.

About the artist

A native of Charleston, South Carolina, and long-time resident of Oʻahu's North Shore, Rick Smith learned to play the guitar at 14. He formed his first band then and, by the time he was in 10th grade, they were performing in area clubs. His recording engineer career first took him to Los Angeles where he worked with many name recording artists at the legendary Record Plant Recording Studios. Since then he has also built a recording studio for local entertainer Al Harrington, managed LA's Design FX Audio, and formed a series of bands on O‘ahu.
