Non-profit The Estria Foundation and The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority partner to create Mele Mural in Kaimukī, Oʻahu
The Estria Foundation is pleased to announce their recent partnership with the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority and Kaimukī High School to create an inspiring mural along Kaimukī Avenue.
Students working with the Estria Foundation began their three-week workshop with a huaka'i (excursion) to Ka Papa Loʻi ʻO Kānewai at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The inspiration for their Mele Mural comes from the moʻolelo (stories) and mele (music) learned on these huaka'i, which are led by cultural practitioners from the area.
The public is invited to join the Pāʻina Pēna (Paint Party) on Friday, October 23, 2015 from 9:00am -- 3:00pm at Kaimukī High School.
A Mele Mural Unveiling is planned for Friday, November 6 from 10:00am -- 11:00am at Kaimukī High School, Building D. Please join us in celebrating the efforts of our Mele Murals ʻōpio (youth) as they unveil their community mural and share the moʻolelo and mele that inspired the content of their mural.
The Estria Foundation thanks the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority for allowing us to create artwork inspired by a sense of place. The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority awarded funding to Mele Murals to fulfill its commitment to supporting Hawaiʻis native culture and community. Over the next year, Mele Murals has committed these funds to create murals across communities that perpetuate and sustain the landscape and heritage that make Hawai‘i so special.
The entire Mele Murals process will be documented by ʻŌiwi TV through photography, film, social media, and published materials that will provide opportunities for ongoing education, cultural tourism, and community development.
About The Estria Foundation
Through Mele Murals, The Estria Foundation hopes to develop youth into visual storytellers to preserve Hawaiian values, increase cross-generation and cross-island engagement for all to learn and share the mele and stories that highlight important artistic, cultural, and historical themes with a global audience.
Mele Murals builds upon the tradition of many public art, youth development, art education, and community development programs that have been successful around the U.S. and internationally. With the goals laid out for Mele Murals across our Hawaiian islands, the number of partners involved and the incorporation of ancient Hawaiian protocols, the Mele Murals model is an unprecedented one.
