Discover Yuletide Joy @ your Library
Get in the holiday spirit by joining the Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) for free programs and events statewide - ranging from special Holiday-themed Storytimes and Craft Activities, Christmas Concerts, Performances and Movies, to visits with Santa Claus. Young children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Contact the hosting library as soon as possible for more information or if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed. Programs and events are subject to change; here is a sampling:
KAIMUKI/TOWN AREA EVENTS
* Dec. 5 - "A Musical Holiday Film," 2 p.m. at Hawaii State Library (ph. 586-3520): See this classic holiday film suitable for the whole family. Please call the Library for the movie title and screening location.
* Dec. 19 - "Royal Hawaiian Band Christmas Concert," 10:30 a.m. at Aiea Public Library (ph. 483-7333): Enjoy music for the holidays and more by the talented musicians of the legendary Royal Hawaiian Band.
* Dec. 1 - "Angel Treat-Holder Craft Class," 1:15 p.m. at Aina Haina Public Library (ph. 377-2456): The Lei Ilima Club will demonstrate how to make an angel treat-holder out of a recyclable greeting card for party favors, table centerpieces, tree toppers, ornaments, or gift-wrapping accents. All craft materials will be provided by the Lei Ilima Club. This class is for adults, teens, and keiki ages 8 and older. Registration is recommended; call the Library or sign-up at the reference desk.
OTHER AREA EVENTS
* Dec. 1-12 - "Christmas Tree Ornament Contest," at Aiea Public Library (ph. 483-7333): Keiki pre-Kindergarten to Grade 6 are invited to enter this contest using creativity to decorate a paper ornament. The Winner will receive a prize; all entries will be displayed in the Library, where everyone can vote for their favorite ornament from Dec. 14-19. Visit the Library to pick up an ornament entry form; last day to enter the contest is Dec. 12.
* Dec. 1-12 - "Vote for Favorite Hawaii Island-themed Ornament Contest," at Kailua-Kona Public Library (ph. 327-4327): See ornaments on display: one vote allowed for each age category, per day. Ornament with most votes in each age category wins a $10 gift card.
* Dec. 1 - "Holiday Puppet Times with Christy Lipps Ah Sing," 10:30 a.m. at Mililani Public Library (ph. 627-7460): Puppeteer Christy Lipps Ah Sing will present favorite children's Holiday Season stories in a lively puppet show featuring beautifully hand-crafted puppets and songs. She will also perform: Dec. 3, 10:30 a.m. at Aina Haina Public Library (ph. 377-2456); and at Kapolei Public Library on Dec. 15, 6 p.m. (ph. 693-7050) where Santa and his Elf will make an appearance - bring a camera for a photo op with Santa.
* Dec. 1 - "Community Sing-along with Herman Kiili," 6 p.m. at Wahiawa Public Library (ph. 622-6345): Talented community resident Herman Kiili will lead a sing-along of favorite holiday music.
* Dec. 2 - "Polar Express: Hawaiian-Style," 6 p.m. at Wahiawa Public Library (ph. 622-6345): Hawaiian Railway Society Operations Manager Steve Vendt will discuss the extensive railway network on Oahu and its role in the development of commercial agriculture and business back in the day, and particularly how families would take the train from Ewa Beach to Honolulu for Christmas shopping and Holiday Season festivities. See the Library's book display that features trains in holiday stories, e.g. Chris Van Allsburg's "The Polar Express."
* Dec. 5 - "Leilehua High School Chorus Holiday Performance," 11 a.m. at Wahiawa Public Library (ph. 622-6345): Enjoy listening to holiday season and other favorite music with audience participation on some songs as well.
* Dec. 5 - "Holiday Craft: Making Christmas Boxes," 11 a.m. at Kealakekua Public Library (ph. 323-7585): Join volunteer Joan Bovee who will guide participants in creating a colorful box to use for packaging a present. For ages 7 and older; limited to 15 participants.
* Dec. 8 - "Adult Coloring: Holiday Cards," 3 p.m.-5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Kahuku Public & School Library (ph. 293-8935): Adult coloring is one of the latest fads for artists or anyone who wants to create beautiful art, and is a new stress-release hobby for teens and adults. Color holiday designs that can be added to note cards for family and friends. All supplies - coloring pages, coloring pencils and/or fine-point markers - will be provided.
* Dec. 8 - "Winter Concert and Craft Night," 5:30 p.m. at Kahuku Public & School Library (ph. 293-8935): The North Shore Keiki Chorus and North Shore Singers Company will perform festive holiday music, followed by a felt Christmas tree pen craft that participants can decorate, and light refreshments will be served.
* Dec. 12 - "Kapolei Chorale Christmas Concert," 10:30 a.m. at Kapolei Public Library (ph. 693-7050): Hear a performance of traditional carols as well as favorite Christmas songs.
* Dec. 12 - "Paper Cutting: Holiday Centerpieces," 11 a.m. at Kealakekua Public Library (ph. 323-7585): Adults can learn to create 3-dimensional paper ornaments for table centerpieces from Michelle Kenney using scissors and X-acto knives.
* Dec. 12 - "Holiday Read Aloud," 1 p.m. at Waipahu Public Library (ph. 675-0358): UH-West Oahu Club students perform a read aloud of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Free craft-making such as Santa beard and hat, bookmarks, and ornaments. Lucky drawings for prizes and complimentary cookies, while supplies last.
* Dec. 14 - "Karol's Karolers Christmas Concert," 6:30 p.m. at Ewa Beach Public & School Library (ph. 689-1204): This seasonal a cappella group, composed of members of well-known Oahu church choirs, will perform international Christmas songs from around the world.
* Dec. 15 - "Make Felt Ornaments," 6 p.m. at Kahuku Public & School Library (ph. 293-8935): Hand-craft and customize vintage felt ornaments with buttons, felt, rickrack, sequins, or embroidery stitches.
* Dec. 19 - "Honolulu Handbell Ensemble Christmas Concert," noon at Hawaii State Library (ph. 586-3520): Hear a variety of holiday music and songs performed with handbells including selections from "The Nutcracker Suite," plus vocalists, instrumentalists, and the Kapiolani Community College Synthesizer Ensemble.
* Dec. 21 - "Christmas Movie Marathon," 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ewa Beach Public & School Library (ph. 689-1204): Free screenings of holiday-themed films including: "Mickey's Magical Christmas," "Santa Buddies," "Mickey's Twice Upon A Christmas," "Secret of The Wings," and "A Very Merry Pooh Year."
* Dec. 24 - "Holiday Toddler Storytime," 10 a.m. at Makawao Public Library (ph. 573-8786): Join Aunty Ninfa for a very special storytime with stories, songs, a craft, and a surprise visit from Santa Claus.

Library Cards
You may apply for a library card at any Hawaii public library. The initial card is FREE for Hawaii residents. Cards are also free for military personnel and their dependents with a copy of orders. The resident card replacement fee is $5.00. Resident library cards must be renewed every five years. There is no charge for the renewal.
