Double Down with the Double Bass in HPR's Atherton Studio, August 20
Ernie Provencher brings his double bass to the Atherton Studio on August 20 for a concert of classical music, jazz, and his own original jazz compositions featuring the bass in duets, quartets, and sextets. His collaborators are Sandy Tsukiyama, vocals; David Yamasaki, guitar; Rocky Holmes, sax and flute; Duane Padilla, violin; and Ethan Capone, piano.
Reservations for "Double Bass Doubles Down" may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID; plus online service charge. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.
The performance includes pieces from the Romantic and Baroque periods by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Georges Bizet, J.S. Bach, Arcangelo Corelli, and Henry Eccles. Provencher adds, "The excellent acoustics in HPR's performance space, particularly for double bass, were the inspiration for this Atherton concert."
About the artist
Ernie Provencher is a versatile and accomplished bassist. He has lived and worked in Boston; New York City; Washington, D.C.; Santa Cruz, CA; Hong Kong; and Helsinki, Finland. He plays many styles including classical, jazz, Latin, Balkan, Brazilian. His compositions for dance have been presented internationally. He has been a musician at The Theatre Academy of Finland and The Hong Kong Academy of the Performing Arts, and has played for many modern dance companies and classes. He currently teaches band at Hanahauʻoli and Honolulu Waldorf School, and is the lecturer of Music for Dance at UH Mānoa. His performance credits include: Curtis Fuller, Don Cherry, Mick Taylor, Eartha Kitt, Michael Franks, Dan Hartman, Ray Anderson, Marty Erlich, Ray Bryant, Joanne Brackeen, Jeff Peterson, Makana, Bill Tapia, George Gruntz, Cecil Taylor, Charlie Musselwhite, and Gabe Baltazar.
About HPR's Atherton Performing Arts Studio
The Atherton Studio seats 75 people and is home to a magnificent Bösendorfer concert grand piano. The Studio is available for rent for musical performances, community group meetings, and lectures. It is located in the HPR office and studio complex at 738 Kaheka Street, across from the Honolulu Don Quijote. Metered street parking is available, as are paid lots at the First Hawaiian Bank (Kapiolani branch) and in the Pan Am building.
