Hawaii Gagaku Society with guest Fujima Takamasa

The Hawaii Gagaku Society, under the direction of Rev. Masatoshi Shamoto, welcomes the renowned Fujima Takamasa of the Institute of Japanese Dance and Culture in a performance entitled "HARMONY OF JAPAN: THE TRADITIONAL ART TO LINK HAWAII AND JAPAN VOL. II." In this concert, traditional meets modern with ancient Japanese court music and traditional & modern style Japanese dance.
Takamasa Fujima is a Japanese traditional dancer born in Tokyo in 1971. After graduating from the playwriting course of Nihon University College of Art, he has continued to create new types of Japanese traditional dance that relate to farce. He has participated in commercial theatrical performances since 2003, and has also been in charge of choreography in a variety of plays and dramas on TV. In addition, Takamasa has actively taken part in many overseas dance performances and workshops. In recent years, he organized "Harmony of Japan" as Japanese dance performances in Hawaii and France, Russia, supported by Japan Foundation.

Join the choirs of UH Mānoa for our annual fall program featuring University Chorus, Concert Choir, and Chamber Singers. This year's theme is the word of William Shakespeare (1564--1616) who died 400 years ago this year. Our musical tribute will include settings from Thomas Morely to Ralph Vaughan Williams, Latin Jazz to Radiohead!
As a special addition, the singers will be joined by members of the Department of Theatre & Dance who will offer short scenes and readings between musical sets.
Don't miss this festive, diverse, and entertaining romp through the works of William Shakespeare!

Enjoy an evening of Balinese and Javanese traditional and contemporary gamelan music at the Music Department's Barbara Smith Amphitheater. (with alternate rain location)
The ensembles, made up of students and community members, continue a tradition of the study and performance of gamelan music in Hawaii established in 1970. The concert will include gamelan music from Central Javanese court and regional repertoires, Balinese gamelan and dance, and a new multimedia work.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Formed in 2008 at the Curtis Institute of Music, the Dover Quartet swept the 2013 Banff International String Quartet Competition and has since become one of the most in-demand ensembles in the world. "The young American string quartet of the moment," says The New Yorker. Currently the faculty Quartet-in-Residence at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music, they've received the Cleveland Quartet Award and Hunt Family Award by Lincoln Center, and won grand prize at the Fischoff Competition and special prizes at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition.

One of the most sought after session horn players on saxophone, flute and clarinet, solo artist, arranger and composer Lou Marini has electrified audiences with his "sultry, seductive and singular" sounds in jazz, rock, blues, classical music and in film and television shows and specials.
He's been a member of Blood, Sweat and Tears, The Saturday Night Live Band, The Blue Brothers Band and his credits include hundreds of albums, many of which have gone platinum.
He has recorded with such luminaries as Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Lou Reed and Frank Zappa, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, The Band and Steely Dan to name just a few. Lou is an original member of The Blues Brothers since their first appearances on Saturday night Live, and has appeared in both movies and on all of recordings and tours.
