About the artist
Sandy Tsukiyama grew up studying classical piano and listening to Dixieland jazz and Calypso in a musically oriented family. After receiving a BA in Ethnomusicology from UH Mānoa, she spent three years in Brazil at Escola de Música da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro Centro Para Pesquisas Folclóricas (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro School of Music Center for Folkloric Research), where she studied folk music traditions on a Rotary Post-Graduate Fellowship for International Understanding. During her time in Brazil, Tsukiyama became immersed in the vibrant musical culture of the city. She appeared at various venues from posh piano bars to national TV broadcasts, and befriended numerous household names from the Brazilian music scene.
Since returning home in 1983, Sandy has maintained her passion for Latin American musical culture through singing in flamenco, salsa, mariachi, Brazilian & Latin jazz groups. Community work includes teaching, interpretation, and translation of Spanish and Portuguese languages. Other performances include singing for salsa great Adalberto Santiago, Puerto Rican cuatro virtuoso Yomo Toro, Martin Nievera with the Honolulu Symphony Pops, and as part of The Company Singers in three consecutive productions of A Merry Christmas With Friends and Nabors.
Since 2002, Tsukiyama has been an occasional backup singer for high school friend Yvonne Elliman. in July 2015, she retired from a 28-year teaching career that included General Music, Japanese, Spanish and Special Education at the secondary level in Honolulu public schools.
