Latin Jazz and Salsa from The Freddie Miranda Jr. Quintet in Atherton Studio, January 27

Percussionist extraordinaire Freddie Miranda Jr. leads his quintet of all-stars in an evening of salsa and Latin jazz in HPR's Atherton Studio on January 27.

Reservations for The Freddie Miranda Jr. Quintet may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $25 general, $20 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

About Freddie Miranda Jr.

Freddie Miranda Jr. was born in Puerto Rico and credits his father, the well known Puerto Rican woodwind player, Wilfredo Cruz Miranda, aka Freddie Miranda, Sr., for his earliest inspiration. Miranda Jr.'s first musical skills/lessons were on saxophone and clarinet, but he found his calling in percussion at eight years old. He received his first formal studies at the Escuela Libre de Música Ernesto Ramos Antonini, and was selected for the prestigious McDonald's All American High School Band.

After studying at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music, he worked and performed for different bands and artists at a local and international level; became one of the first-call percussionists in studio recordings; performed with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, for operas, and zarzuelas; and taught percussion. He has shared the stage such stars as Bobby Valentín, Luís "Perico" Ortiz, Jerry Rivera, Gilberto Santarosa, Ray Barreto, Juan Gabriel, Ruben Blades, Eddie Palmieri, Olga Tañón, José Feliciano, and the Humberto Ramírez Jazz Project.

In 2006, Miranda moved to Warner Robins, Georgia to perform as a member of the Band of the United States Air Force Reserve. He deployed to the Middle East in 2008 as part of an assignment in support of thousands of military troops and has been awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, among others.

Miranda is currently based in Fussa, Tokyo, Japan, where he works with the Band of the Pacific/Asia as the drummer/percussionist for the jazz band act Pacific Showcase and is the musical director of Pacific Clave, a world music quartet in which he performs as a multi-percussionist. He also performs and tours throughout Japan with Salsa Swingoza, Japan's #1 salsa band. He is also tours Japan, Korea, Guam, Australia, Hawaiʻi, and the Pacific region in military and non-military performances.

Freddie Miranda Jr. has endorsed MEINL Percussion and Cymbals for the past 19 years.

About HPR's Atherton Performing Arts Studio

The Atherton Studio seats 75 people and is home to a magnificent Bösendorfer concert grand piano. The Studio is available for rent for musical performances, community group meetings, and lectures. It is located in the HPR office and studio complex at 738 Kaheka Street, across from the Honolulu Don Quijote. Metered street parking is available, as are paid lots at the First Hawaiian Bank (Kapi‘olani branch) and in the Pan Am building.
