Plan to attend Hawaiian Electric's Grow Hawaiian Festival on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Bishop Museum. This free Earth Month celebration highlights Hawai‘i's culture, native flora, and sustainable lifestyles.

The festival offers fascinating crafts, creative learning opportunities, fun activities for keiki, a farmers' market, ‘ono food, and Hawaiian-style music. Ongoing at the festival, attendees of all ages can enjoy a variety of activities:

  • See all of Bishop Museum's exhibits, including the latest: Hulia ‘Ano, Inspired Patterns.
  • Listen to Nā Hoku Hanohano award winners Kuana Torres Kahele and Weldon Kekauoha, and watch hula by Merrie Monarch participants Nā Pualei O Likolehua and Ke Kai O Kahiki.
  • Gain insight from well-known traditional artisans on beating and printing kapa, making lei, weaving lau hala and ‘ie‘ie, woodworking, and pounding poi. Also learn how early Hawaiians used plants for herbal and spiritual healing.
  • Attend the keynote presentation by Kanekoa Kukea-Shultz, executive director of Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi, and learn about for farming sustainably, as taught by Hawaiian kūpuna.
  • Learn about environmental protection programs from representatives from DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Kupu Hawai‘i, and the Outdoor Circle.
  • Shop at the Farmer's Market for locally grown produce, hand-made products, and native plants. And ask the O‘ahu Master Gardeners about growing plants in our environment.
  • Participate with your keiki in hands-on activities and educational games with prizes, and share new experiences.
  • Then relax on the lawn and treat yourself to some ‘ono food prepared by popular vendors.
