Representative Barbara Marumoto
(R) District 19
Office 808-586-6310

Robotics is a critical component of the Lingle-Aiona Administration's Hawai`i Innovation Initiative. It engages students in science, technology, engineering and math education and provides them with the teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to continue their education and succeed in the global economy. Strengthening these aptitudes and abilities in Hawai`i's youth is key to building a brighter future for our state.

These are the brightest engineers I've worked with in my life," Said NASA Robotics Project Manager Mark Leon, who is planning to use Hawaii's robotics students to help in construction of a $500,000 micro-rover to be sent to the moon in 2012.

Representative Barbara Marumoto, Mark Leon, Sacred Hearts Academy students Jeanessa Slaughter, Adria Fung, Kimberly Noguchi, Governor Linda Lingle and Representative Gene Ward discussed the importance of recognizing the necessity of promoting robotics at an early age and sustaining students' interest in STEM education throughout their schooling, the six robotics programs have formed the Hawai`i Robotics Organizing Committee.

All six of the robotics programs coordinated their efforts to promote robotics education in elementary, middle and high schools statewide. A crowd of over five-hundred government officials, military, business and community leaders gathered to watch the demonstrations from six major types of robotics programs, including FIRST Robotics, which was the program the Sacred Hearts students participated in at the state capitol. Other events included FIRST LEGO League, Botball, Underwater Remote Operating Vehicle, VEX Robotics and Micro Robotics.
