Kalani Celebrated Its 50th Anniversary


Kalani celebrated its 50th Anniversary at a fundraising banquet at the Waikiki Marriott on July 19th. Honorary Chair Bank of Hawaii, executive Alton Kuioka, (Class of '61) and the event chair Don Omura (Class of '85) welcomeall community members who attended. Proceeds will be used towards the construction of a learning center and the purchase of equipment to re-establish the school newspaper.

Retired faculty came out in force to support Kalani at its 50th anniversary celebration. Dan Meisenzahl (Class of '85) from KITV's morning newswas funny and entertaining as the emcee as was Co-emcees and Kalani High alumni Leslie Wilcox, president and CEO of PBS Hawaii. Anchor Pamela Young (Class of '66) narrated a video recalling Kalani achievements.

Supporters of the event include; State Agricultural Director Sandra Kunimoto, recent National Principal of the Year Gail Awakuni,entrepreneur Michael Irish, building industry executivesDawn Suyenaga, and Christopher Lau, Cori Lau, Attorney at Law and former Hawaiian Homes ChairRay Soon. Honolulu Star-Bulletin journalists bought a table.

Entertainment was provided by Kalani alumni, including 2008 Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Bobby Moderow Jr. and musicians Steve Min and Harvey Yoshioka. A keepsake of a 50-year memory book, which includes a page representing each class, a little history, as well as sponsorship opportunities, was available for purchase that evening.

For the occasion, Representatives Barbara Marumoto and Ken Ito presented a joint House and Senate certificate with Senator Sam Slom and Norman Sakamoto; and althoughPrincipal Gerald Teramae was sick, he showed up just to give a bang up speech about how Kalani alumni and parents will gear up to restore Kalani's image as the #1 high school in the state.

The Kalani alumni are planning a golf tournament in August to raise funds for new weight room equipment.
