Kaimuki Neighborhood Board Minutes Posted for August 15, 2012 Meeting

New Staff Member – Councilmember Chang introduced Micha Uekata as a
new member of his staff.

Bus Routes – It was noted that City Council will be looking to
restore bus route services.
·
Curbside Recycling – Curbside recycling will be expanded to 20,000
homes on Oahu. Kaimuki Intermediate and Kuhio Elementary will still have the
white bins for public use.

Petrie Park – The playground at this park was recently replaced
with new equipment.
·
Press Conference – Councilmember Chang noted that he and
Councilmember Kobayashi will hold a press conference at Waialae and 9th Avenues
to inform the community about the Road Rehabilitation for the
area.

Property – It was noted that residents suing neighbors due to blight
property will have to go to court. It would seem that home appraisers would be
called as expert witnesses.

– Thanks were expressed to Councilmember Chang for all the he does for
the
community.

· Adult
Education Program – It was noted that the Adult Education Program at
Kaimuki High School is likely to continue depending on enrollment. August 20-31,
2012 enrollment will be done at the McKinley High School Campus.
· State
Recycling Program – It was noted that in 2005 only 25 percent of the
State was recycling. With the recycling program, in 2012 it has increased to 70
percent.
·
Economy – This is the second consecutive year that the State has
ended the fiscal year in the black. The economy is now on track toward economic
recovery, sustainability, and may restore basic services cut from the State
Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Land and
Natural Resources. Also able to continue progress made in the 2012 legislative
session is to restore the State’s watersheds, invest in early childhood
education, update the State’s technology system, create jobs, and address
the need for affordable
housing.
Senator Les Ihara – Senator Ihara noted that the legislature was not in session, two senators were not returning and he would be available for questions.

Follow Up – Board Member McGuire requested follow up for the following
items:
1.1. Ammunition
Stocking – Why have various Federal Government Agencies needed to
stock up on ammunition? McGuire read that the Social Security Administration
stocked up on 174,000 hollow point rounds and the Department of Homeland
Security stocked up on 715 million rounds of ammunition.
1.2. Ethanol Subsidies
– In 2012 the U.S. purchased 13.2 billion gallons of ethanol.
1.3. Livestock Costs
– It was noted that livestock is being slaughtered sooner than it would be
normally which in turn, the left over corn after the ethanol has already gone in
to the livestock feed, it goes to human consumption (the corn does). It was
requested that a message be sent to Washington D.C., requesting they do away
with a mandate that drives costs up and makes food
scarce.

regarding the economy, it will also depend on the degree to where State services
were discontinued or cut.
