HSPLS Receives $100,000 Financial Literacy Grant
The Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) is the recipient of a $100,000 grant from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation and the American Library Association (ALA). HSPLS was among 21 recipients who shared $1.8 million in grants as part of the Smart investing@your library initiative.
Smart investing@your library is administered by the Reference and User Services Association - a division of ALA - and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. The program funds library efforts to provide patrons with effective, unbiased educational resources about personal finance and investing. Since its inception in 2007, the program has awarded a total of $10 million to public libraries, community college libraries and library networks nationwide.
In this 18-month grant administered through the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, the Hawaii State Public Library System will present free multigenerational financial literacy programs using performance, competitions, online engagement and workshops to improve patrons' financial skills. For students in kindergarten through grade 6, HSPLS will partner with the National Theatre for Children to present dramatic performances of "Showdown at Cash Canyon." Participating children will learn the importance of long-term savings and the skills needed to achieve it. Performances will be combined with access to the theatre's online learning platform, which will provide interactive exercises designed to reinforce concepts introduced during the "live" performances.
Tweens and teens will have an opportunity to test their skills in a "LifeSmarts" competition sponsored by the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) Office of the Securities Commissioner's Investor Education Program. LifeSmarts is a free consumer education competition for students in grades 6 through 12.
Adults and seniors will be invited to attend presentations on safeguarding investments, understanding predatory lending and avoiding fraud. HSPLS and the DCCA Office of the Securities Commissioner's Investor Education Program will co-host these presentations at selected public libraries.
