Hokua (To Lift Up) at Mililani Middle School, a bronze and concrete sculpture by Henry Bianchini
Hokua at Mililani Middle School
In 1969, Henry Bianchini sailed from California to the Hawaiian Islands in a 30-foot trimaran he constructed himself. During this voyage the artist faced many challenges and learned that perseverance and imagination are the keys to reaching one's destinations in life. Hokua is an expression of courage, determination, and achievement meant to inspire those setting off to face unfamiliar horizons.
For this Art in Public Places -- Artists in Residence Program project, the artist, Henry Bianchini, was selected by an Art Advisory Committee, who also assisted with the selection of a location, the medium and theme of the work of art, and review of the design proposals. Mililani Middle School students participated as part of the educational component, designed to include student and teacher participation in the conceptualization, design, construction, and installation of the commissioned work of art at the school.

Young Artists of Hawai`i
The 2017 Young Artists of Hawai‘i exhibition is a program established by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA) to recognize and display student artwork in accordance with Section 9-4, Hawai‘i Revised Statutes. The program is funded through the Works of Art Special Fund and provides opportunities for students to participate in a juried art competition. Permanent display facilities were designed and constructed for the Pā Kamali‘i Courtyard at the Hawai‘i Convention Center and a competitive annual exhibition was developed by HSFCA in cooperation with the Hawai‘i Department of Education, Hawai‘i Association of Independent Schools Authority, and the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority.
The Young Artists of Hawai‘i exhibition is open to all public and private school students, grades kindergarten through sixth. The theme My Culture, My Family, and Me is intended to inspire students to express how they feel, see, or interpret their lives in the islands. Once schools submit artworks, distinguished judges select 96 works for exhibition.
The 2017 Young Artists of Hawai‘i exhibition will enable visitors to experience the common interests and cultural diversity of Hawai‘i through the art of its youth.
Two generations of artists: Kunāne Wooton and his daughter Kamakanuionālani with SFCA Executive Director Jonathan Johnson. Kamakanuionālani's drawing Ao Maka ‘O Ka Maka includes a depiction of ahōlua (wooden sled) she is building with her father's help. Kunāne's piece E Ho ‘ai `Ole ‘Oukou (carved wood and stone with waxed linen), in the SFCA's Art in Public Places Collection, is currently on view in the "HAWAI‘I: Change & Continuity" exhibit at HiSAM.
Ao Maka ‘O Ka Maka, Kamakanuionālani Wooton, Hanahau‘oli School. Grade: 5. Teacher: Lauren Okano. On display in the Young Artists of Hawai‘i My Culture, My Family, and Me exhibit at the Hawai‘i Convention Center through March 2018.

Hawai`i Opera Theatre
HOT's Education Coordinator, Blythe Kelsey, and accompanist Eric Schank at the May 2017 First Friday at the Hawai`i State Art Museum.
Visitors to the May 2017 First Friday at the Hawai`i State Art Museum enjoyed an evening of opera with singers from the Hawaii Opera Theatre's Orvis Opera Studio and staff. Performers included Erik Haines, HOT Director of Education, and Blythe Kelsey, HOT Education Coordinator. HOT receives funding from the SFCA's Biennium Grants program for their educational outreach. Their outreach is included in a recent Opera News article (Behind the Scenes: Hawaii Opera Theatre) - "We worked at a school where five of our leads were special-needs kids," Kelsey says. "Two of the main characters had major social issues in class. The kids learn how to talk in public, what to do on a stage, how to work well with groups. They gain a sense of self-worth that affects their day-to-day life."

Corrections
The May 2017 issue announcement of the Process Under Pressure exhibit mistakenly omitted the names of several of the artists with work in the exhibit. The list of artists has been updated in this issue. We regret the omission.
Previous issues including May 2017 incorrectly listed the Annual MFA Group Show 2017 exhibit as approved by the SFCA Board for an AASC visit. The exhibit approved by the board was the An After School Special exhibit featuring works by graduate students at the University of Hawai`i-Mānoa and curated by GRRIC Contemporary. An AASC visited the An After School Special exhibit in May 2017.
