LEI DAY CELEBRATION
2011
Fragrant flowers are gathered and strung into a lei.
The spirit of the maker (and giver) is part of the lei. So when you receive a
lei that someone has given you - they give you a part of themselves. There is
even a song for Lei Day, and you are sure to hear the tune “May Day is Lei
Day” in Hawai‘i. This holiday has been celebrated since 1927, and
has a tradition of a Lei Queen which began in 1928.
The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) implements
a series of events for Lei Day.
The celebration begins in March with the Lei Queen Selection Event at McCoy Pavilion. This free event is from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 12, 2011.
To prepare for the annual Lei Contest, DPR provides numerous free lei-making workshops on the island of O‘ahu.

On May 1st of each year, this
beautiful event is at Queen Kapi‘olani Regional Park and Bandstand in
Waikīkī from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The event features the
annual lei queen and court, as well as local entertainment and hula
hālau.
The Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association
traditionally plays in the lei exhibit/ho‘olaule‘a area (open area
between the bandstand and the shell).
The Lei Contest Exhibit is open to the public in
the open area between the bandstand and the shell. See some of the most
exquisite lei in the world exhibited in a variety of colors and methods,
featuring contest entries from the adult, children and lipine (ribbon/yard) lei
contests.
Calling all mo‘opuna (grandchildren) - come
visit Tūtū (grandmother) at Tūtū’s Hale and
hear stories, play Hawaiian games, learn a song, a hula, how to make a lei, and
learn how to weave with lauhala.
A Ho‘olaule‘a of Hawaiian craft
exhibits and demonstrations, as well as, craft, lei and food vendors will
also be in the park all day.
The event is free and open to the public.
On May 2nd of each year, the
closing ceremony for the annual Lei Day Celebration is at Mauna ‘Ala (The
Royal Mausoleum) and Kawaiāha‘o Church.
Lei Day is sponsored by the Hawaiian Electric Company,
and Times Supermarkets; as well as a generous grant from the Hawai‘i
Tourism Authority.
