Hip hop/funk/jazz band The Deadbeats "Do Anything" in HPR's Atherton Studio, July 18
Known as a venue to enjoy uniquely personal performances of contemporary Hawaiian, blues, jazz, or classical music, the Atherton Studio hosts its first hip hop performance on Saturday, July 18 with the local, hip hop/funk/jazz band The Deadbeats. Following their 2013 Hōkū-nominated release "Do You," The Deadbeats present for their Atherton debut a program they call "Do Anything." The evening opens with their previously released material, revitalized and re-envisioned, and concludes with brand new material created for their forthcoming album. Not only a chronicle of the band's development, the program takes audiences on a journey into the shared experiences of everyday life, as viewed through the distinctive lens of emcee Harumi Jerome and his hip hop lyrics. "Do Anything" also features the newest musical addition to The Deadbeats' lineup, vocalist Tahiti Rey.
Tickets are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. Reservations may be made at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Deadbeats formed in 2007 and have since become a prominent part of Honolulu's live music scene. Voted "the best up-and-coming local group" by Honolulu Weekly, the band's dedication to producing original music that is as provocative and subtle as it is playful and self-aware has won over audiences across the state and beyond. Their music features both sophisticated arrangements and free improvisation between the musicians. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin said of MC Harumi Jerome's lyrics, "there's attitude, there's irony and there's imaginative vocabulary worth hearing."
The band is comprised of Harumi James, emcee; Ethan Capone, keyboards; Paul Nelson, bass; Micah McLaughlin, drums; and vocalist Tahiti Rey.
The Deadbeats have shared the stage with such renowned hip hop artists as People Under the Stairs, Black Star, The Blue Scholars, Common, Mos Def, Jurassic 5, and others. They received a 2013 Nā Hōkū nomination for Hip Hop Album of the Year, and won 2012 Best Jazz Group in Honolulu Weekly, and Hard Rock Cafe's 2011 Battle of the Bands.
About the artists
Harumi Jerome's experience in live performance began as a child, when he would dance around his parents' living room and sing along with recordings of Michael Jackson's greatest hits. His mother was cautiously supportive, memorably quoted as exclaiming, "Off the couch!" By the age of seven, Harumi had started writing poetry at the behest of his older sister, who attested that "he was good at it." He was introduced to hip hop music during his middle school years and began adapting his poems to lyric form because his friends assured him that "chicks love rappers." Harumi is the emcee of The Deadbeats and lives in the Kaimukī area.
As the son of a two pianists, Ethan Capone's affinity for music began at a young age. He supplemented his early musical education at school in New York, studying under the head of Ithaca College's Jazz Studies program, guitarist Steve Brown. Since relocating to Hawaiʻi in 2007, he has established himself in the local music scene, performing in numerous jazz ensembles (notably alongside Chris Botti) and collaborating with local artists such as Henry Kapono (including a performance at the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards featuring Mick Fleetwood). Recently, Ethan became Minister of Music for the Nelles Chapel Gospel Choir and had the opportunity to accompany Grammy Award-nominated gospel singer/songwriter Vashawn Mitchell. Ethan currently resides in Makiki.
A native of the Boston area, Micah McLaughlin grew up playing drums recreationally and absorbing a wide variety of musical influences. He met Ethan while attending Ithaca College in New York and subsequently moved to Hawaiʻi along with mutual friends. While working in the hotel industry in Waikīkī, Micah was introduced, through Ethan and then-bassist/producer Brett Robinson, to Harumi - and the foundation for what became The Deadbeats was set. Having rediscovered the drums as an adult, Micah provides the rhythmic backbone as well as the comic relief for The Deadbeats. He currently lives in Pālolo Valley.
At the age of 11, Paul Nelson found an old guitar in his parents' storage closet and immediately gravitated to the instrument. His early interest in punk rock quickly became formal study of the classical guitar and Paul went on to attend USC's Thornton School of Music, studying with Grammy-winning guitarist Scott Tennant. He was a top finisher in the ASTA Guitar Competition, a featured soloist with the LA Youth Symphony, and performed in masterclass for acclaimed artists Pepe Romero, Roland Dyens and Tillman Hoppstock. After graduating, Paul continued at USC, under the tutelage of bebop legend Bruce Forman, and completed a Master's Degree in Studio/Jazz Guitar. He currently resides in Pālolo Valley and performs nightly with Waikīkī stage show 'Legends in Concert' and as a sideman to various local artists.
Tahiti Rey is a local singer/songwriter from Kailua, Hawaiʻi, currently residing in Hawaii Kai. When she isn't rocking the stage with The Deadbeats, you can find her performing acoustic gigs at local hotels and hotspots or providing the soundtrack for couples on their wedding day. Tahiti is currently working on a solo album of original songs, due for release this fall.
