Stephen Inglis Performs Original Americana Songs from Recently Released CD, August 22
"Learning You by Heart in Concert" at HPR's Atherton Studio
Stephen Inglis, the award-winning guitarist and singer-songwriter best known for his prowess with Hawaiian slack key guitar, showcases his talents as an Americana/Roots musician in the Atherton Studio on Saturday, August 22. He will be performing from his recently released solo album, Learning You By Heart, an amalgam of original country, folk, rock tunes and more. Inglis will be backed by the Piranha Brothers (Mike Piranha on bass, Tom Piranha on drums) and Eric Petersen on piano and organ, all who also appear as guest artists on the album.
Reservations for Inglis' "Learning You By Heart in Concert" may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.
Learning You By Heart, released in spring 2015, contains 13 original songs; four were co-written with the award-winning and world-renowned author, historian, and filmmaker Gavan Daws. Legendary duo Tuck and Patti appear as guest artists and producers on the track, "Don't Postpone Joy." Throughout, Inglis' love of many forms of American roots music shines through, with the heart of Hawaiian slack key still beating in time.
About the artist
Stephen Inglis is regarded as one of Hawai'i's most diverse artists. Born and raised in Honolulu, he played in a concert hall piano recital at age five and formed a group with legendary Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzman when he was barely out of his teens. He has a strong respect for tradition, but is also a creative innovator. For his album Slackin' on Dylan he married slack key guitar with 13 well-known songs by Bob Dylan and re-envisioned them in his own unique style, winning a Hawai'i Music Award for his efforts. Waimaka Helelei, his duet album with multiple GRAMMY® winner, slack key master and prolific songwriter Dennis Kamakahi, was dedicated to the people of Kalaupapa and Hale Mohalu (who suffered from Hansen's disease) and contained original songs composed by Inglis and Kamakahi, as well as compositions by the late composer/activist Bernard Punikaiʻa. The CD not only won Hawaiʻi's highest musical honor, a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award, it's on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
Besides Learning You By Heart, Inglis has produced three albums of his own singer-songwriter originals, acoustic and electric. He lives the music life to the full: club gigs, concerts, festivals, touring, and recording. He has played to sold-out crowds at esteemed venues such as The Barns at Wolftrap and the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley.
