"The Best of Aloha Shorts -- Live!" Reunites Actors, Musicians, and Authors from Hit Radio Program
The half-hour radio program Aloha Shorts was "a major jewel in HPR's local-programming crown," writes former Hawaiʻi Public Radio President and General Manager Michael Titterton in "The Best of Aloha Shorts." In celebration of the release of this new anthology from Bamboo Ridge Press, HPR presents a live evening of some of the poems and stories that were outstanding in performance.
These "best of the Best" will be read live by the original Aloha Shorts performers at the Palikū Theatre on Saturday, August 11, at 7:30 p.m. Seats ($20 - $40) may be reserved at bit.ly/boaslive or by calling (808) 955-8821 during business hours. A limited quantity of autographed copies of "The Best of Aloha Shorts" are also available for purchase with ticket order.
The Best of Aloha Shorts -- Live! features works by Bamboo Ridge co-founder Darrell H.Y. Lum, Lois-Ann Yamanaka, Lisa Linn Kanae, and Puanani Burgess, among others. The cast includes Daryl Bonilla, Nara Cardenas, Ginger Gohier, Karen Kaulana, Stephanie Keiko Kong, Devon Nekoba, and Aito Simpson Steele. The evening is hosted by the former Aloha Shorts host, Cedric Yamanaka, with musical entertainment from the show's house band Hamajang (Derek Ferrar, Charley Myers, and Mark Scrufari), and an appearance by a surprise guest.
Aloha Shorts was a co-production of Bamboo Ridge Press and Hawai‘i Public Radio. and aired weekly on HPR between 2004 and 2013. It brought together some of Hawai‘i's finest writers, actors, and musicians for celebrations of local literature. The show was taped monthly before a live audience in HPR's Atherton Studio, and was subsequently edited into half-hour episodes. Aloha Shorts was co-produced by Craig Howes, Sammie Choy, and Phyllis S.K. Look, who also served as the editors for The Best of Aloha Shorts.
In addition to the over thirty selections that provide a generous sample of the best of Hawai‘i literature, "The Best of Aloha Shorts" features behind-the-scenes accounts of the making of this popular radio program through personal essays by some of the writers, actors, musicians, sponsors, and the host. An online link, bestofalohashorts.com, also provides readers with recordings of every piece's broadcast performance.
HPRʻs event sponsor for The Best of Aloha Shorts - Live! is Le Jardin Academy.
