About the artists
Jim Guss is the Nalu Collective's composer and arranger. He grew up Honolulu and, after graduating from the Berklee College of Music, lived and performed extensively in Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and Honolulu. Guss' eclectic guitar style has accompanied many notable jazz artists including Peter Erskine, Mark Egan, Steve Smith, Frank Catalano, and Danny Gotlieb. He has also performed with his own ensembles at numerous jazz festivals and clubs around the US.
Vocalist Rachel Gonzales is from Hilo, but has made her mark on the Honolulu music scene as a performer, studio musician, and vocal teacher. She's worked with some of HawaiʻI's most celebrated jazz musicians and ensembles including Betty Loo Taylor, Nueva Vida, and Watercolors. Whether interpreting a lyric or singing a harmony in a vocalese arrangement, Gonzales' virtuosity never fails to amaze.
Scott Shafer is considered to be one of Hawaiʻi's elite drummers. With over 38 years of experience and a palette of grooves covering every genre, he's the first-call musician for stage and studio dates. Shafer received his bachelor's degree in music from the prestigious Berklee College of Music.
Bailey Matsuda was born in Boston, and raised in Kaimukī and Nuʻuanu. He holds degrees in Music Composition from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He is active as a composer, producer, and musician whose accomplishments include: composer and producer of music for "Heartstrings" (a PBS documentary on the Kamaka ʻUkulele family) and producer of the Na Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning Single of the Year, "Molokaʻi on my Mind" by Blayne Asing. He has led and performed with his own groups at numerous venues around the islands, as well as at the Hawaii International Jazz Festival and with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He teaches at Kamehameha Schools in the Performing Arts Department.
Mark Tanouye has been a professional musician for almost 30 years and enjoys a busy career as a bassist and an occasional keyboardist. From 2000 until 2008, he was the keyboardist/bassist for Hawaiian music legends Cecilio & Kapono. For the last ten years, he has been the main bassist for Manoa DNA. He has worked both in the US and internationally with artists like Jake and Bruce Shimabukuro, Michael MacDonald, Nine Inch Nails, and Def Tech.
