Atherton Concert Features New Music Exchange with Korea, February 16

On February 16 in HPR's intimate Atherton Performing Arts Studio, Ebb & Flow Ensemble offers a concert of new music celebrating its ongoing musical cultural exchange with South Korea. The program features the Hawaiʻi premiere of a newly commissioned work by Shinhee Park, works by other contemporary Korean composers, and piano solos inspired by Korean poetry. The eveningʻs performers are Ignace "Iggy" Jang (violin), Sung Chan Chang (cello), and Robert Pollock (piano).

Tickets are $25 general, $20 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID; online service fees apply. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

The trio for violin, cello, and piano by Dr. Shinhee Park was commissioned as part of an exchange with Veritas Musicae in Seoul. Dr. Park, its president, had invited American composers Sarn Oliver, Peter Swanzy, William Anderson, and Robert Pollock to create short piano pieces based on Korean poetry. These piano solos premiered in Seoul in November 2018, and will be performed for the first time in Hawaiʻi in the Atherton on February 16.

Other works of new music to be performed are world-renowned Isang Yun's Konigliches Thema for solo violin; Eugene Lee's Etude No. 3 for piano; Sun Young Park's piano trio Heem; Trio, the last work by iconic American composer Henry Cowell; and a new solo by Robert Pollock Piano Synergy #4. Also on the program is Maurice Ravel's ravishing Sonata for violin and cello.

About the artists

Sung Chan Chang started playing the cello when he was 7 years old. He was accepted to the Seoul Ye-Won Art School with prestigious honors in 2001, and the Juilliard Pre-College as a scholarship student in 2002. He graduated from The Korean National University of Arts with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2008, The Juilliard School with a Master of Music degree in 2010, Yale University with an Artist Diploma degree in 2012, and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Northwestern University.

Chang studied with Richard Aaron, HyoungWon Chang, Myung-Hwa Chung, Andre Emelianoff, Hee Duck Lee, Aldo Parisot, and Hans Jørgen Jensen. He has won numerous competitions. He made his debut concert with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra in 2000. He has since performed with orchestras and appeared as soloist or chamber musician in the U.S. and South Korea.

Ignace "Iggy" Jang is the concertmaster of the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, faculty member of the Music Department at the University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa, and Director of the String Program of the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival. He has performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia in concert halls such as the Bunkamura Hall in Tokyo, Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris, the Seoul Arts Center, and the Sejong Cultural Arts Center, playing before the First Lady of Korea. Solo appearances include the Honolulu Symphony, the Colorado Symphony, the Versailles Chamber Orchestra, and L'Orchestre Provence Alpes Cote d' Azur.

Robert Pollock has organized over 500 new music concerts. As a pianist, he has premiered over 100 compositions by composers from around the world. He recently performed solo piano recitals in Hawai'i, Korea, Mexico, and Japan. He participated as composer-in-residence in Composer in Residence Day, William Paterson University, and the Festival for New American Music, Sacramento State University His over 140 compositions have been performed around the world, several of them recorded and published.

Pollock received a B.A. in Music from Swarthmore College and an M.F.A. in Musical Composition from Princeton University. He is co-founder of the New York Guild of Composers and founder/director emeritus of the Composers Guild of New Jersey. Since 1999, Pollock has directed a statewide contemporary music and arts presenting organization, Ebb & Flow Arts, Inc., based on Maui.

About HPR's Atherton Performing Arts Studio

The Atherton Studio seats 75 people and is home to a magnificent Bösendorfer concert grand piano. The Studio is available for rent for musical performances, community group meetings, and lectures. It is located in the HPR office and studio complex at 738 Kaheka Street, across from the Honolulu Don Quijote. Metered street parking is available, as are paid lots at the First Hawaiian Bank (Kapi‘olani branch) and in the Pan Am building.
