• Find someone to move your garbage cans back into place.
  
• Find someone to check mail, packages, & newspapers.
  
• Leave a radio on, preferably on a timer.
  
• Let your neighbors know that you're going away and when you're coming back.
  
• If away for an extended period of time: Have someone mow your lawn or rake your yard. A burglar will assume the resident is at home and tending to his property.
  
• Leave a light on somewhere in the house, preferably on a timer.
  
• Check your motion detector lights to make sure they work before leaving.
  
• Never leave a message on your answering machine that tells the caller that you are away from home. Instead, say: "I'm not available now."
  
• Have a neighbor park in your driveway or in front of your house.
