Looking for new activities in the Honolulu area to inspire your child outside of school?

Three words: Robotics for Kids!

Robotics for Kids uses fun, hands-on projects to get your child's creative juices flowing. Your child will learn how to build and program robots with LEGO® bricks and software -- all while making friends, developing new skills and having a great time with STEM. For many kids, robotics class is a highlight of their week.

To fully engage and challenge your aspiring engineer, computer programmer or scientist, we have several kids' robotics programs available:

Grades 2-4: Robotics 101 and 102
Grades 4-6: Robotics 201 and 202

First timer? Your child is welcome at our center in Kahala - Honolulu. He or she can jump into Robotics 101 or Robotics 201 without any prior experience. Our teachers are happy to adjust to your child's ability.

How we teach kids robotics each week

In each Robotics for Kids class at Sylvan of Kahala - Honolulu, your child and a buddy work together to plan and build a new robot using LEGO® bricks, letting their creativity and imaginations loose. Along the way, they learn science and engineering concepts, such as how pulleys, levers and motors work.

As the kids' robots take shape, they experiment with LEGO® Education's award-winning WeDo™ software. They discover how to apply computer programming concepts and find new ways to get their "bot" moving.

Then, the energy levels (and smiles) really reach a high point, as the kids challenge other teams to friendly games or take part in imaginative play.

At the end of each robotics class, your child enjoys a wrap-up activity to reinforce the STEM skills he or she learned in class. (You'll hear all about it on the way home.)

With Math Edge, Sylvan of Kahala - Honolulu's math mastery program for grades 1--5, a few hours a week are all it takes to give your child an edge in math. It's convenient and fun! You sign your child up for two one-hour sessions per week at our center in Kahala - Honolulu, choosing the days that work best for your family's busy schedule. Designed for all students, Sylvan's Academic Reading program concentrates not only on the basic skills needed for success in reading, but also on vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and higher-level critical thinking skills.

MATHEMATICS ESSENTIALS
Designed to provide students of all ages with specific instruction on basic computation, as well as problem solving, measurement, graphing, equations, and numeration skills. The program addresses mastery as well as application in these skills listed above.

ALGEBRA & GEOMETRY
Designed to develop or enhance skills in these critical college prep curricula. Sylvan's Algebra and Geometry programs carefully cover the critical strands enabling students to grasp the essential concepts of these fundamental courses.

SAT/ACT COLLEGE PREP
Designed for students preparing for college entrance examinations, this program provides fundamentals in math, reading, and writing for SAT/ACT success. The program also focuses on effective test-taking strategies and studying techniques specific to each test.

SYLVAN ACADEMIC WRITING
Designed to improve writing skills, the program teaches the process approach to writing paragraphs, letters, and essays. For younger writers, the program stresses the fundamentals of capitalization, punctuation, and sentence building. For older writers the program concentrates on developing thesis statements, targeting audiences, and effectively portraying the purpose of the essay. Editing skills are also sharpened using a mainstream word-processing program.

HOMEWORK SUPPORT
Designed to provide direct assistance and individualized attention with homework for students of all ages from elementary to post high school. All academic subjects as well as outlining, note-taking, test-taking, and memorization strategies can be taught.

ADVANCED READING
Designed for the older and more advanced reader, the program enhances the effective reading rate by increasing the student's speed while boosting overall comprehension by utilizing strategies and drills to push the reader to a whole new level of reading.
