OTTOSTORY

Otto's cheesecake phenomenon started in 1990, when he made a cake for his mom for Mother's Day. After taking a cheesecake to a potluck and getting eight orders on the spot, the rest is history! The cheesecake was ordered from JoAnne at Java Java, and was then sold in restaurants and cafes, at punk rock shows and large events like Hawaii's Big Mele, and directly ordered by customers. In the 1990s, the first commercial for Otto's cheesecakes was released on Radio Free Hawaii, and was actually voted on as a top-10 song. Due to high demand, and after Otto's cheesecakes were available in specialty coffee shops and art houses, the original OttoCake Bakery opened near the Honolulu airport in 1996…. and even served as a venue for local underground punk rock shows. OttoCake is now located in Honolulu's Kaimuki neighborhood.

Owner and baker Otto makes all of his cheesecakes from scratch. He has developed over 286 flavors; up to 9 flavors are available in the bakery each day.

In addition to his delicious cheesecakes, OttoCake also sells carrot cake, coffee cake, brownies, milkshakes (lilikoi, chocolate espresso, and pumpkin [seasonal]), OttoChocolate, and cheesecake sandwiches -- all handmade from scratch.

Q: What days is OttoCake open? A: Our bakery is open seven days a week, including holidays (except Christmas Day and New Years Day).

Q: Where can I park when I come to OttoCake?
A: We have a parking stall available for customers, located to the right of the bakery's front door.

Q: How many flavors of cheesecake do you make?
A: There are 286 OttoCake flavors; we carry up to nine different flavors in the bakery on any given day.

Q: Does OttoCake sell whole cheesecakes?
A: Yes! We sell 6″ cakes (approx. 12 slices) for $25; 8″ cakes (approx. 16 slices) for $45; and 10″ cakes (approx. 16 slices) for $65.

Q: Can I special order a whole cheesecake?
A: Yes! Please place a special order at least four days in advance by texting your order to (808) 834-OTTO [6886].

Q: What forms of payment does OttoCake accept?
A: Our bakery only accepts cash.

After 20 years of going to specialty coffee shops and art houses to find the best cheesecake in Hawaii, confection lovers can now find their favorite cheesecake at its own bakery, Otto Cake.

Owner and baker, Otto, makes all of his cheesecakes from scratch; the crust being Otto's secret recipe. "It's been 20 years and people keep eating my cheesecake. Opening up a bakery just seemed like the right decision," said Otto.

With over 86 different flavors, Otto's cheesecake ranges from the traditional New York, to holiday festive Pumpkin and Eggnog, to deliciously decadent Orange Chocolate Chip, Key Lime, Neapolitan, and the newest Mac-nut Pineapple Coconut. But ask him what's his favorite and it's Chocolate Chocolate Chip. Currently selling slices and whole 10" cheesecakes. This is a delectable deal you won't find anywhere else.

Reflecting back on his many years of cheesecake baking, Otto said, "It all started when I sold my first cheesecake to (now defunct) Java Java. The best was making a key lime birthday cheesecake for Billy Joe, singer for Greenday. He said he liked it - sweet!"
