ABOUT POPOKI + TEA
Popoki + Tea is a cat cafe in the Honolulu neighborhood of Kaimuki! Seek refuge from the stress of everyday modern life, and chill with our adoptable cats, while enjoying our handcrafted milk tea or iced tea. We also offer cat-themed coffee selections through our neighbors at The Curb Kaimuki.
Our cats and kittens come from KAT Charities, a nonprofit animal rescue based in ‘Aiea. Up to 20 cats and kittens live in our lounge until adoption. Not looking to adopt? Most of our guests come in just to hang out with our cats. Socialization is so important for cats, so your time spent at Popoki + Tea is absolutely beneficial--to you and them.
We started out in June 2018 hosting monthly cat cafe pop-ups, where cat lovers came together to meet adoptable kitties. We're continuing this role as convener at our permanent cat cafe, which opened in February 2020.
OUR MISSION is to provide our cats and our guests a peaceful environment where they can find each other, whether it's for a moment or for a lifetime.
OUR VISION is to ignite a love for cats throughout our community. Cats are cool, and so are the people who love them! Our ultimate vision is to see the number of responsible, long-term cat guardian homes grow, while reducing the amount of needless suffering through hands-on education. By spreading more awareness and love for cats in our island community, we hope to positively transform lives.

HOW TO ADOPT A CAT
Our adoptable cats at Popoki + Tea are from our 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue partner, KAT Charities. Their volunteers travel around O‘ahu to directly rescue cats and kittens, often when they're most vulnerable. All cats are required to be in foster care for a minimum 2-week quarantine period before they arrive at Popoki + Tea.
If you're visiting to meet a specific kitten or cat, we recommend contacting us first to verify its availability, since adoptions can sometimes happen fast! You may call us at 808.425.4131, or email us at meow (at) popokiandtea.com.
A paid visit to meet our cats is required. Please book your visit here. During your visit, our team is happy to discuss with you the type of cat you're seeking and answer your questions, as we want to do as much as possible to support you through this process, and promote responsible, lifelong pet ownership!

OUR STORY
Growing up on farmland in Wai‘anae, on O‘ahu's Leeward Coast, I was always around all kinds of animals… except cats. My dad always claimed he was allergic. Turned out, he just didn't like them.
In adulthood, I moved to "town," Honolulu, to be closer to jobs, but away from the company of animals. I briefly worked at a startup, and one day, before a meeting, my manager talked about an East Coast cat cafe that he had supported through Kickstarter. A cat cafe? Wild.
A small-but-life-changing volunteer service project introduced me to a cat's affection. A few months later, I welcomed home my first cat, Mara. Through Popoki + Tea, I hope to introduce many more to that same affection I felt that day as a volunteer, and have continued to feel every day Mara has been in my life.
I've always had a thing about challenging stereotypes, which I trace back to my childhood in Wai‘anae -- a troubled place, sure, but one that also holds its values close, and introduced me to so much opportunity as a young creative.
Cats have their fair share of stereotypes. How many cartoons have a cat as the bad guy? Cats are often characterized by their aloofness and their self-sufficiency, but it doesn't make them any less capable of affection, or deserving of love and care. Come visit us… you'll see.
Oh yeah, and my dad? He fell hard for Mara and now has a cat of his own.
