Saint Louis School Opens New Campus Facility:
The Clarence T. C. Ching Learning and Technology Center

(Honolulu, HI) Saint Louis School leaders announce the grand opening and official dedication of the Clarence T.C. Ching Learning and Technology Center on Friday, March 18, at 10:00 a.m. "Believe to achieve," remarked school president Walter S. Kirimitsu. "The completion of this impressive edifice was made possible by the generous donations of so many alumni, families and friends, and for that we are eternally grateful. I especially want to thank the Clarence T. C. Ching Foundation for providing us with the monetary resources to make this vision a reality. We are truly blessed to have such a state-of-the art complex on campus."

Saint Louis 1932 alumnus, Clarence T.C. Ching, was a successful businessman, developer, a dedicated family man, and a community-minded philanthropist. Ching was well known for developing the areas around Honolulu Airport, Salt Lake, Moanalua, Fort Shafter and Tripler with noted Hawai'i businessman and former Saint Louis classmate K.J. Luke. In 1970, he built Kukui Gardens, one of the largest affordable rental projects in the state, home to roughly 2,500 residents in 857 units in downtown Honolulu. In all, his two nonprofit housing projects added 1,500 units to the Honolulu housing market.

The Clarence T. C. Ching Foundation was founded in 1967 and continues to fulfill Mr. Ching's vision to help the needy and underprivileged people in need as well as supporting the education of Hawai'i's youth. Today, as a charitable, private 501(c) (3) organization, the Ching foundation has made grants of over $30 million to island schools and other institutions.

The three-story, 27,000 square-foot facility will feature a virtual learning center, designated spaces for advanced technology applications, and studios for visual arts. The school's historical archive, Business Leadership program, music and Performing Arts programs will be housed here as well.

The total cost of the building was $14.5 million dollars and took approximately 12 months to complete. The Clarence T. C. Ching Foundation donated over five million dollars. In addition to the Ching Foundation significant contributions, one million dollar donations were received from Dr. Lawrence K. W. Tseu, BSc., D.D.S., FAGD '51, the Gilliland family and Dr. John M. Corboy, M.D., ABES '56 with matching funds from other friends and alumni.

From shoe shine boy to rising star, Dr. Tseu is a dentist, renowned philanthropist, U. S. Air Force vet, regent at the University of Oxford, a father, a grandfather and much, much more. The Dr. Lawrence K.W. and BoHing Chan Tseu Presidential Suite will be named in honor of Dr. Tseu and his late wife, BoHing Chan.

The Gilliland family has helped Saint Louis Schools over the years by providing scholarships to students. The family has agreed to give the million dollar gift to help build the new facility. Accordingly, the buildings Technology Suite will be named in honor of the Gilliland family.

Dr. Corboy is founder and president of the Hawaiian Eye Foundation. Corboy has practiced ophthalmology for over 40 years, and was founder and surgeon/Director of the Hawaiian Eye Center, Hawai'i's largest eye care provider, until his retirement. The Business Leadership program will be named in honor of Dr. Corboy for his generous donation.

And, Robert J. Morgado '60 with matching funds from his Saint Louis College (School), class of 1960, and current School Board of Trustees, contributed over $970,000 as their 50th Anniversary gift to Saint Louis School. The 1960 class will be recognized by having a Mahalo plaque in the second floor lobby named in their honor. Morgado served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Warner Music Group, Inc. from 1985 to 1995. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of World Communications, Inc., and as Chairman of the Maroley Media Group, a media entertainment investment company.

Since joining the school in 2005, Kirimitsu has driven his vision of offering students technology that is relevant and applicable for the 21st century. With former Hawaii Department of Education Superintendent, Patricia Hamamoto--the first female principal in the all-boys' school history--the school community has a renewed commitment to academic excellence including technology integration in an updated curriculum. "The completion of the Clarence T.C. Ching Learning and Technology Center is a major step in fulfilling our vision of ensuring our students graduate with 21st Century skills and competencies," said Hamamoto.

In February, the school launched a major capital campaign to continue campus building improvements and renovations. "This is an exciting time to be at Saint Louis School" said former Lieutenant Governor, James "Duke" Aiona, now Executive Vice President for Development and Recruitment. "We are improving each and every day and it's been especially gratifying to see many alumni returning to the rugged slopes of Kalaepohaku. We have an awesome 165-year history of producing Hawai'i's leaders and we look forward to many more years as a school of opportunity. I invite all prospective students to ‘Be part of the story' and enroll today" said Aiona.

Founded in 1846, Saint Louis School is a private school for boys (grades 6-12) that educates and challenges students to become gentlemen of character who reach their full potential through the Catholic Marianist tradition of spiritual, academic, physical, and emotional maturity.
