  • Hawaii's Public Libraries will Celebrate National Library Week in April 2011


Libraries are places for new beginnings. Whether you are getting your first library card, learning new computer skills or planning a trip, the library is the place where your story begins. This National Library Week, join our nation s libraries and librarians and Create your own story. National Library Week (April 10-16) is a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries and librarians. Hawaii s public libraries statewide will be hosting a variety of free programs for all ages throughout the month of April.

All program are sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawai i, Marriott Resorts Hawaii, Ko Olina Resort & Marina, Meadow Gold Dairies, HMS Host, Hansen Distribution Group, ING Foundation, Armstrong Produce Ltd., Bowman Connectivity Solutions, Inc., Girard s Dressing, Roberts Hawaii Tours, Toshiba Business Solutions, and DFS Hawaii. Additional funding and support is being provided by the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College s Statewide Cultural Extension Program, the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Program schedules are subject to change. Contact the library (10 days for Oahu; 15 days for neighbor islands) in advance to request a sign language interpreter or if other special accommodation is needed. MUSIC AND DANCE OF BALI
Traditional performing arts are an integral part of daily and ritual life in Bali. Balinese performing arts are rich, vast, and complex and the arts that are practiced in contemporary Bali have an important link to the past. Performers I. Made Widana and Anna Reynolds will demonstrate these traditional Balinese music and dance. The ensemble includes gongs, bronze metallophone instruments of various sizes, double-headed drums, and flutes. This one-hour program is suitable for all ages.

SLACK KEY WITH JEFF PETERSON
Recognized as one of Hawaii's most versatile musicians, Jeff Peterson is at the heart of the Hawaiian music scene today. His passion for the guitar has allowed him to shine as a solo artist and has given him the opportunity to collaborate with a wide variety of artists from Hawaii, across the US, and abroad. His focus on Slack Key guitar, classical, and jazz music has allowed him to develop a unique and transcendent voice on the guitar while being deeply rooted in the traditions of his Hawaiian heritage. Born on the Island of Maui, Jeff Peterson grew up on the slopes of Haleakala, where he was introduced to the rich heritage of Hawaiian music by his father, a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) on the Haleakala Ranch. He began studying the guitar on his own, his interests broadened and he delved into a wide variety of musical genres that the guitar plays a part in. He studied jazz and classical guitar at the University of Southern California and at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. This 45-minute is recommended for all ages.

GONG ROW MUSIC & DANCES OF THE SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES
The Mahalohalo Ensemble will introduce the music and rarely seen dances such as Igal (a dance with extended fingernails) and Kapagapir (a fan dance) that originate from Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago of the Southern Philippines. The music derives its lineage from traditions predating the 16th century and is related to gong row traditions in North Borneo, Malaysia and North Sulawesi, Indonesia with origins in ceremonial, ritual, and entertainment purposes. This 45-minute performance will offer audience participation to give children and adults a hands-on experience of these unique cultural traditions. Suitable for ages 5 and older.

THE ART OF CARTOONING
Cartoonist Dave Thorne will present a fascinating lecture/demonstration on the art of cartooning. The audience will look at various cartoon forms and watch how the cartoonist develops character. It is a fun, stimulating, and interesting journey through a form of graphic arts which we often enjoy, but seldom have the opportunity to understand from the point of view of the creative artist. This 45-minute program is recommended for ages 8 and older.

SLAM POETRY WITH KEALOHA
Slam poetry is a modern day form of performance poetry that is inspiring large audiences throughout the world. Described as Hawaii's unofficial slam poet laureate, Kealoha is an internationally acclaimed poet and storyteller. His performances combine poetry, storytelling, movement, music, theater, and interactive speaking. His content investigates social, personal, and cultural themes to give audiences a roller-coaster experience filled with laughter and reflection. He is the first poet in Hawaii's history to perform at a governor's inauguration. Kealoha has also performed at various events such as the National Storytelling Network Conference, the Bay Area Storytelling Festival, and the Honolulu Storytelling Festival.

A TRIBUTE TO SLACK KEY
John Keawe is a songwriter and slack-key guitarist who was born on the Big Island of Hawaii, in the little town of Hawi in North Kohala. He will offer a tribute to the slack key style and include selections from the work of Raymond Kane, Leonard Quan, and may more. John is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano and Hawaii Music awards recipient and a contributing artist on Hawaii s 1st Grammy award in 2005. Program is recommended for ages 5 and older.

THE ART OF TAIKO FEATURING THE KENNY ENDO TAIKO ENSEMBLE
This unique 45-minute cultural program will feature a demonstration and lecture on the art of performing with taiko (Japanese drums). Learn about the different drums and percussion instruments of Japan as used in traditional and contemporary music. Kenny Endo is a performer, composer, and leader of contemporary taiko. He trained in western drums and percussion for performance with jazz, fusion and classical artists before starting his taiko career. This 45-minute program is recommended for ages 5 and older.

STORIES OF HAWAII AND THE WORLD
Storyteller Dave Del Rocco will share folktales from every corner of the globe, including Hawaii, Laos, Italy, Alaska, the Philippines, Africa, and more. These tales are mostly funny and explain how different cultures view aspects of their world. Dave has been a student of the Hawaiian language for many years and has worked as a librarian for the Hawaii State Public Library System for nearly eighteen years, twelve of those as a children s librarian. He is currently a Hawaii reference librarian at a Honolulu private school. Program is recommended for ages 5 and older.

CHAMBER MUSIC HAWAII GALLIARD STRING QUARTET
The Galliard String Quartet, considered Hawaii's premier string quartet, performs programs including the works of such favorite composers as Mozart, Hayden, Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. Music of the masters is the Galliard's forte, but the group's repertoire also includes Strauss waltzes. romantic interludes, light classics, Hawaiian music, popular music, and more. GSQ performs a repertoire of songs written by Queen Lili uokalani such as Aloha Oe, Puia Ka Nahele, the Queen s Prayer, and many more. The quartet consists of two violins, viola, and cello. The musicians that make up this quartet were all part of the now disbanded Honolulu Symphony. This 45-minute program is suitable for ages 5 and older.

STORIES OF THE WORLD
Storyteller Sandra MacLees has been collecting stories all her life, from the folktales she read as a child to the Greek myths she discovered in college. She finds stories everywhere! In 1978, she became a professional storyteller and started sharing her stories in schools and public libraries. She has also been featured in storytelling festivals across the United States. This 45-minute program is suitable for ages 5 and older. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

ORAL HISTORY: TOGETHERNESS AND HANAI GRANDDAUGHTER
This program is based on the recently published book, Talking Hawai i's Story: Oral Histories of an Island People. Edited by Michi Kodama-Nishimoto, Warren S. Nishimoto, and Cynthia A. Oshiro. Featured in the book are men and women who began their lives in the first decades of the 1900s and who speak of their times and lives, as well as their parents' and grandparents' experiences - spanning three centuries and extending beyond Hawai i. Two narratives will be shared at this 45-minute program. Togetherness Was There All the Time is about growing up and working in a sugar plantation on the Big Island. Hanai Granddaughter will be about traditional Hawaiian lifestyles. Program is suitable for ages 8 and older.

THE NANAKULI HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
This one-hour performance will feature about 25 student members from the Nanakuli High School Performing Arts Center (NPAC). Under the direction of Robin Kitsu, these talented students will perform a variety of songs and dance from their award winning show. This summer, NPAC will travel to Edinburgh, Scotland to perform at the prestigious Fringe Festival, a three-week, citywide showcase of the arts. Nanakuli was one of 2,200 American high schools nominated to participate in the festival and one of only 62 selected. This program is also sponsored by the Friends of the Waianae Public Library. Program is recommended for all ages.

TALKING HAWAI I S STORY: ORAL HISTORIES OF AN ISLAND PEOPLE
Based on the book, "Talking Hawaii's Story: Oral Histories of an Island People," the author will present a short talk about the book and introduce two narratives to be read aloud by actors. The readings which bring to life the words of actual people will be of interest to longtime residents as well as newcomers to Hawaii. Featured will be Koloa's "Alex Ruiz: Always a Rebel" and Maui's "Alice Saito Gouveia: A Brave One." This 45-minute program is suitable for ages 12 and older.

FOLK ARTS OF CHINA AND ASIA CHINESE KNOTTING
Barbara Chung Ho will provide a customized workshop on the folk art of Chinese knotting. She will demonstrate and offer a brief history of the art. Barbara was born into a family rich in Chinese tradition and learned Chinese as a second language. She studied the art of papercutting and knotting while in Taiwan. This one-hour program is suitable for ages 10 and older. Registration is recommended.

HAUNTED HAWAII
Storyteller Jeff Gere will share original chicken skin retellings of true supernatural tales of Hawaii. Jeff is celebrated for his physical style of storytelling and rubbery face. He blends his talents as a painter, puppeteer, mime, and director into a performance style which has electrified audiences throughout Hawaii and around the world for over two decades. In 1989, Gere founded the Talk Story Festival, Hawaii s largest annual storytelling celebration. This 45-minute program is suitable for ages 8 and older.
