National COOP Month

Co-op Month 2011--is there a better time to begin getting your members and community ready for the year-long, global celebration of cooperatives that is the International Year of Cooperatives? We agree, and so this year's Co-op Month celebration is themed to help you kick-start your celebrations and begin leveraging the messaging and excitement of the year.

The slogan for Co-op Month 2011 is the same as that for the International Year: "Cooperative enterprises build a better world." This slogan conveys the contributions that cooperatives make to social and economic development.

The 2011 Co-op Month logo and other materials incorporate the slogan and the seven cooperative principles that differentiate cooperatives from other businesses.

Celebrate Co-op Month during all of October--but especially during Co-op Week, Oct. 16-22, 2011.

Whole Ginger Root Extract Found to Have Anti-Cancer Properties

Ginger, a culinary favorite, is not only wonderful to add to your vegetable stir-fry or to pair with your sushi, but it also has anti-cancer properties. This root has been used for thousands of years throughout Asia for its ability to treat colds and flus, improve digestion and alleviate nausea. In more recent years it has been used for the treatment of arthritis, poor circulation and motion sickness. This past month, in a groundbreaking animal study published in the British Medical Journal, scientists reported the anti-cancer benefits of the whole ginger root for prostate, breast and cervical cancers. This study showed that breast and cervical cancers stopped growing in the presence of whole ginger extract. Even more remarkably, prostate cancer cells actually underwent cell-death following treatment with ginger root! The growth of the prostate tumor was reduced by 56% in mice fed the ginger extract compared to the mice that did not receive supplementation. This information suggests that whole ginger root may not only be able to halt cancer growth, but in some cancers it may also be effective in increasing cancer cell death.

While previous research teams focused on particular active ingredients in ginger root, this study on whole ginger root demonstrated the importance of synergistic compounds found in only very small amounts. One of the benefits of using whole foods for the treatment of disease is that there are few if any side-effects. However, an average sized person would need to consume high doses (about three and a half ounces daily) in order to get the therapeutic levels achieved in the study. If you chose to purchase whole ginger root extract, make sure the label states that it is a full spectrum extract. Since ginger has been shown to have a mild blood thinning effect, you should consult your doctor before supplementing with high dose.
Even if you just use small amounts of fresh ginger to make carrot ginger soup or liven up your vegetables, you can feel good that you are using food as your best medicine!
