• FIRST in Hawaii Regional Robotics Competition -- March 22-24, 2012

It was a "Robot Rumble" as robots filled the University of Hawaii's Stan Sheriff Arena and challenged each other in a basketball-style game, and our cameras were there to capture the excitement! Through the HEI Charitable Foundation, Hawaiian Electric was able to help support six Oahu high schools -- namely Kalaheo, Kapolei, McKinley, Nanakuli, Pearl City and Waianae -- to participate in this robotics event which promotes STEM education. Teams were tasked to design and build their robot in six weeks using a kit of parts and standard rules.

In the Finals, McKinley earned a spot along with Punahou and West Hawaii Exploratory Academy on the Blue Alliance Team to play against Waialua, Baldwin and Island Pacific Academy which comprised the Red Alliance. After an exhilarating three rounds, the Red Alliance came out victorious. The three schools in the Red Alliance plus Kealakehe and Kohala now advance to the FIRST Championship held in April in St. Louis, MO. Our congratulations go out to all the 38 teams that participated in the 2012 Hawaii Regional Robotics Competition!
