Chairman Akaka rallies supporters of the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act outside the U.S. Capitol (July 26, 2012).

Sen. Akaka: "A woman's safety should not depend on where she lives, or on the identity of her attacker. But present federal law has created a jurisdictional maze in Indian Country, effectively giving non-Indian offenders a free pass for crimes committed against women on reservations."

Over the past year as Chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, Sen. Akaka lead the effort to develop bipartisan provisions to save Native women, which were incorporated in the bipartisan Senate bill.

"I strongly urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support these inclusive provisions, particularly those that will close the jurisdictional loophole that gives a 'free pass' to so many non-Native abusers," Akaka said < br>
