Starting the school year off on the right foot can help minimize a child's stress level. You can help your child prepare for the transition from summer to the new school year by encouraging a structured routine from day one.

Back-to-School Tips:

Get back in the routine. Ease transition from summer to the structure of the school year by reestablishing bedtime, mealtime, and homework routines.
Develop a relationship with your child's teacher. Teachers can be the best source for information about your child and can help in setting educational goals for her/him.
Homework routine and place. Designate a specific time and place for homework and study time.
Emphasize organization. Color-coded binders for each subject helps some students stay on track. Keeping notes organized helps for test preparation.
Encourage learning at home. Promoting learning outside of the classroom can help children perform better in school. To nurture reading skills spend at least one hour per week reading with your child.

BEGINNING READING
Designed for the non-reader, the young reader, as well as the older reader who needs review, Sylvan s Beginning Reading program concentrates on phonemic awareness, phonetics, sight vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

ACADEMIC READING
Designed for all students, Sylvan's Academic Reading program concentrates not only on the basic skills needed for success in reading, but also on vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and higher-level critical thinking skills.

MATHEMATICS ESSENTIALS
Designed to provide students of all ages with specific instruction on basic computation, as well as problem solving, measurement, graphing, equations, and numeration skills. The program addresses mastery as well as application in these skills listed above.

ALGEBRA & GEOMETRY
Designed to develop or enhance skills in these critical college prep curricula. Sylvan's Algebra and Geometry programs carefully cover the critical strands enabling students to grasp the essential concepts of these fundamental courses.

SAT/ACT COLLEGE PREP
Designed for students preparing for college entrance examinations, this program provides fundamentals in math, reading, and writing for SAT/ACT success. The program also focuses on effective test-taking strategies and studying techniques specific to each test.

SYLVAN ACADEMIC WRITING
Designed to improve writing skills, the program teaches the process approach to writing paragraphs, letters, and essays. For younger writers, the program stresses the fundamentals of capitalization, punctuation, and sentence building. For older writers the program concentrates on developing thesis statements, targeting audiences, and effectively portraying the purpose of the essay. Editing skills are also sharpened using a mainstream word-processing program.

HOMEWORK SUPPORT
Designed to provide direct assistance and individualized attention with homework for students of all ages from elementary to post high school. All academic subjects as well as outlining, note-taking, test-taking, and memorization strategies can be taught.

ADVANCED READING
Designed for the older and more advanced reader, the program enhances the effective reading rate by increasing the student s speed while boosting overall comprehension by utilizing strategies and drills to push the reader to a whole new level of reading.

SSAT or SCHOOL ENTRANCE TEST PREPARATION
Designed to provide appropriate direct support and instruction in Basic Skills required for success on typical school entrance exams, this effort often makes use of Sylvan s Academic Reading, Mathematics Essentials and Academic Writing programs. This program also focuses on effective test-taking strategies.
