Hawaii Public Radio Spring Pledge Drive Reaches Goal is Less Than 10 Days
To the cheers of station staff and volunteers Hawaii Public Radio concluded its latest on-air fundraiser, Challenge 2014, at 6:44 pm on Friday evening by surpassing its goal of $1,032,000. From start to finish the on-air portion of Challenge 2014 took a little less than ten days. Station staff had hoped for an eight-day drive, in keeping with the last two spring campaigns. Instead, in the words of HPR Music Director Gene Schiller, the drive included "two bonus days" of programming interruptions while staff and volunteer enthusiasts made the case for listener support of the statewide network.
"Disappointed? I should say not!" said HPR President and General Manager Michael Titterton. "To attain this level of community support, with such an outpouring of aloha for everything HPR strives to stand for, is as humbling as it is gratifying. HPR and its supportive audience are a perfect and happy match, and if they needed to spend a couple more days together in this odd way then who's to complain?"
HPR broadcasts over two networks, HPR-1 and HPR-2 (88.1 FM and 89.3 FM in Honolulu, respectively). HPR-1 is its "legacy" network, with its emphasis on classical music and NPR news magazines. HPR-2, a more recent development, is a lively combination of news and public affairs programming, jazz, blues, and Hawaiian music. The finishing touches are currently being made in East Hawaii to bring the second network truly statewide, as is HPR-1.
A total of 4,388 people pledged and contributed a total of $1,033,735 to Challenge 2014. In addition, over 790,000 Hawaiian Airlines frequent flyer miles were added to its "Radio Flyers" program which, in cooperation with Hawaiian Airlines and Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, provides travel assistance to children and families with health-related inter-island travel needs.
