SAINT LOUIS SCHOOL BAND CELEBRATES 130 YEARS
Saint Louis School's Crusader Band will celebrate its 130th anniversary with a concert in the Dr. Richard T. Mamiya Theatre on April 30 at 6:00 p.m. Students in grades 7-12 will perform instrumental numbers specially selected for this commemoration.
Saint Louis School has the oldest high school band in the state, officially established in 1884 under direction of Belgian cornet virtuoso Charles Michiels, although a band had existed since the school's founding in 1846 as the College of Ahuimanu. Michiels, was instrumental in the French government's donation of silver-plated instruments to the band. During the Hawaiian monarchy, the band performed for royalty including King Kalakaua, Queen Liliuokalani, Princess Likelike and Princess Kaiulani.
In more recent years the Saint Louis band played in national marching band competitions, as well as the Fiesta Bowl. Performing from New York to San Francisco, band members have also participated in the Hawaii All-State Marching Band in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Tournament of Roses Parade.
Teacher and band director Bret Shimabuku anticipates this upcoming concert, "we've selected music that will test and push the students' playing ability to new levels, with selections showcasing a variety of songs from Broadway musicals to video game themes and mystical fantasies."
Saint Louis president Walter Kirimitsu notes, "I am proud of the accomplishments of our young men who follow in the footsteps of giants. The band as a living legacy is committed to continue as a contributing resource to Hawaii's artistic and cultural richness for years to come."
In lieu of admission charge, donations of non-perishable food items for Aloha Harvest will be accepted at the door. For more information, contact anniversary concert committee chairman Avery Fukeda at 739-7777 or afukeda@saintlouishawaii.org.
