JUNE - JULY 2014 NEWSLETTER
PROGRAMS @ KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY
FREE MOVIES!
Celebrate summer with free movies on Tuesday evenings in the staff parking area under the Harding Avenue side of the building. Free snacks will be provided courtesy of Friends of Kaimuki Public Library. Movie fans may bring their own snacks.
June 24, 6:00 p.m.: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (PG) -- animated
July 1, 5:30 p.m.: A League of Their Own (PG) -- baseball comedy/drama
July 8, 6:00 p.m.: October Sky (PG) -- true story of a boy growing up in the 1950s in West Virginia
July 15, 5:30 p.m.: Mr. Holland's Opus (PG) -- music, drama
July 22, 5:00 p.m.: A Passage to India (PG) -- literary epic based on the book by E. M. Forster
July 29, 6:00 p.m.: American Graffiti (PG) -- comedy, drama. Classic American summer movie.
SUNDAY STORY TIMES
Story time will be every Sunday through July 27 (except for July 6) at 10:30 a.m. Listen to stories and make crafts. Children through age 7 accompanied by an adult are welcome.
STORMTROOPER VISIT
To kick off Star Wars Week (June 22 through 27), three Imperial Storm Troopers of the 501st Legion Star Wars costuming group will be available for picture-taking in the parking area under the Harding Avenue side of the building on Sunday, June 22, from1:00 to 4:00 p.m
EXPERIENCE HARDWARE SCIENCE
This 60-minute program features projects that use simple equipment and tools found at hardware and craft stores to learn about science, technology, engineering, art and math, and will be held on Wednesday, June 25, at 3:30 p.m. Ages 8 and up. Sponsored by HouseMart Ace Hardware and Ben Franklin Crafts.
SOLAR SYSTEM SCALE MODEL ACTIVITY
The University of Hawaiʻi Institute for Astronomy will conduct a 45-minute interactive activity using a scale model to show the distances and planet sizes on Friday, July 11, at 3:00 p.m. All ages welcome.
MUSIC IN THE LIBRARY
The Sandra Wong String Studio will present "Spark a Love of Music" on Sunday, July 13, at 2:00 p.m.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
You can still register for the Summer Reading Program (SRP) at the Adult, Young Adult, or Children's SRP desks. This year's themes are: Adult--"Literary Elements"; Young Adult (Teens) -- "Spark A Reaction"; and Children's--"Fizz, Boom, Read!"
Read at least one book per week, then take your SRP book log to the appropriate SRP desk to claim a weekly prize. Receive a weekly age-appropriate prize for your pre-reader when you read to them!
Last day: Friday, July 18
Registration is free. Sponsored by Friends of the Library of Hawaiʻi, Friends of Kaimuki Public Library, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Outreach College, and other generous members of the community.
SHADOW ART
Patty Pavel Lenz of the art studio Red Door Artz will present on shadow art on Thursday, July 17, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the covered parking area under the Harding Avenue side of the building.
FRIENDS OF KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY MEETING
Friends of Kaimuki Public Library will hold a general membership meeting in the Young Adult Room (Green Room) on Monday, July 14, at 6:00 p.m
JULY HOLIDAY
All public libraries will be closed for the Independence Day weekend Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 4 through 6.
DONATING BOOKS AND MEDIA
TO KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY
Donations to the Friends of Kaimuki Public Library are used for the support and promotion of the library. Drop off book and media donations during our open hours only, please; you may leave items at our back door/loading dock, just not on Saturdays or holidays. We will be able to provide you with a donation receipt.
The library accepts: all Hawaiian and Pacific materials regardless of condition; books, records, CDs and DVDs in good condition; magazines from the last 6 months. Note: all National Geographic and magazines of Hawaiian /Pacific subjects accepted).
We don't accept: VHS /cassette tapes; encyclopedias, textbooks, law or medical books more than 5 years old; materials that are damaged, moldy, dirty or bug infested.
SUNDAY STORY TIMES
Story time will be every Sunday through July (except holidays) at 10:30 a.m. Children 7 yrs old and under can listen to stories and make crafts. All children should be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

The mission of the Hawaii State Public Library System is to provide Hawaii's residents, in all walks of life, and at each stage of their lives, with access to education, information, programs and services, and to teach and nurture the love of reading and the habit of life-long learning.

Library Cards
You may apply for a library card at any Hawaii public library. The initial card is FREE for Hawaii residents. Cards are also free for military personnel and their dependents with a copy of orders. The resident card replacement fee is $5.00. Resident library cards must be renewed every five years. There is no charge for the renewal.
