Supporters Fully Fund HPR's Energy Efficiency Project

Kaheka Street studios to receive lighting upgrades through WEfficiency

Hawai‘i Public Radio announces it has successfully met its $11,769 goal under the crowdfunding platform WEfficiency, an innovative new initiative of Blue Planet Foundation. Nearly 125 HPR supporters responded to the appeal for a lighting upgrade at the station's Kaheka Street studio and administrative offices. The LED electrical retrofit will be installed by Energy Industries Corporation in the early fall. The project is anticipated to yield immediate savings, with an anticipated annual reduction in energy expenses totaling $6000.

"We know our members and listeners to be extraordinarily generous and savvy," said Michael Titterton, HPR President and General Manager. "They made the connection that every dollar they gave would result in compounded energy savings and that those savings would be put to extremely good use -- the purchase and support of the kind of programming listeners across the state have come to rely on."

HPR embraced a variety of strategies to communicate its WEfficiency goal. Emails, social media, and outreach at station events (such as the station's Atherton Performing Arts Studio concerts and even the popular Honolulu Night Market) resulted in donations that ranged from $4 to $1500.

A unique feature of the WEfficiency campaign allows contributors to designate their donation as a loan to be refunded by the station as soon as it begins to realize energy savings. Seventy per cent of those giving to HPR's lighting retrofit project chose to make their gift as a loan. The WEfficiency model then allows the donor (at the time of repayment) to donate the funds, redirect them to another nonprofit's energy efficiency project, or receive the payment in cash.

"Blue Planet built WEfficiency so that community nonprofits like Hawai‘i Public Radio could spend less on electricity and more on the indispensable services they provide," said WEfficiency project manager David Aquino. "We're thrilled that HPR's supporters understood the value of the project and quickly jumped on board to help HPR save thousands of dollars annually on their energy costs."

Recent WEfficiency campaigns for the YWCA of O‘ahu and Damien Memorial School were also successfully funded.
