PROGRAMS @ KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The last day of the Summer Reading Program (SRP) at Kaimuki Public Library is Friday, July 17.
Register and report at least one title (book, audiobook, or e-book) at your reading level for any week during the program period, and receive an incentive at the SRP desk for your age division.
Divisions and Themes:
Adult: Escape the Ordinary Age 18 and up
Young Adult: Unmask! Grade 7 through 12
Toddlers and Children: Every Hero Has a Story Pre-K through Grade 6. Toddlers/pre-readers may have someone read to them to claim an age-appropriate incentive.
Schedule:
Incentive awards and ongoing registration: Sunday, June 7 through Friday, July 17
Closed for holiday: Friday, July 3; Sunday, July 5

COMIC-ARTIST WORKSHOP*
How to Create a Superhero: on Sunday, July 12, at 1:00 p.m., Christopher Carvalho, creator of the comic book Aumakua Guardians of Hawaii which features local superhero and -heroine characters he invented, will provide instruction on drawing professional-looking superheroes.
Copies of the comic book will be available to purchase for $8.00 with the assistance of Friends of Kaimuki Public Library. Ages 7 and up.

SUNDAY STORY TIME*
Sunday, July 12 will be the last story time in the current series, starting at 10:30 a.m. Children through age 7 accompanied by an adult are welcome. Stay tuned for details on the next story-time series!
50TH ANNIVERSARY
The library celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in the present facility with a program on Sunday, June 21, which was also Father's Day. Representative Calvin Say (St. Louis Heights, Palolo, Maunalani Heights, Wilhelmina Rise, Kaimuki) presented a framed certificate to commemorate 50 years in the present building and 100 years of library service in Kaimuki. Branch Manager Maile Davis and State Librarian Stacey Aldrich accepted it for the library. Musician and singer Danny Carvalho entertained the audience of approximately 100 people. Friends of the Library of Hawaii sponsored the performance. Whole Foods Kahala donated three platters of delicious cookies for the public to enjoy.
BOOK CLUB
Interested readers are invited to join the Kaimuki Public Library Book Club along with volunteers from the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and Friends of Kaimuki Public Library. There will be monthly discussion meetings on designated Friday mornings before the library opens from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Come to the library's front door on Koko Head Avenue before 9:30 to be let in. Participants are encouraged to borrow and read the books in advance. Scheduled book discussions are:
July 17: The lady in gold: the extraordinary tale of Gustav Klimt's masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer (Ann Marie O'Connor) -- HSPLS has print format only.
August 14: Thunderstruck (Erik Larson) -- HSPLS has print and CD audiobook formats.
FRIENDS OF KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY (FKPL) GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
FKPL will hold a meeting of the general membership on Monday, July 20, at 6:00 p.m., in the Young Adult Room. FKPL is seeking a willing and qualified individual to serve as Treasurer. If you are interested or know someone who would be interested in serving, please attend. The meeting will be open to all interested individuals.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
The library will be closed on Friday, July 3 (Independence Day observed), Saturday, July 4 (closed), and Sunday, July 5 (closed). During that time, books may be deposited in the main-entrance book drop in the Koko Head Avenue wall. The book and audio-visual drops in the rear parking lot will be locked, and there will be no CD or DVD return.
The neighboring branches of Aina Haina, McCully-Moiliili, and Waikiki-Kapahulu branches will be open on Friday, July 3, and closed on Saturday, July 4, Sunday, July 5, and Monday, July 6.
COMPUTER TUTORIALS
Sign up at the reference desk for Friday-morning (10:00 a.m., 1 hour max) tutorials in essential computer use, e-mail, surfing the Web, Microsoft Office basics, or any other introductory computer-use topic of your choice. You need a valid HSPLS card to participate.

Library Cards
You may apply for a library card at any Hawaii public library. The initial card is FREE for Hawaii residents. Cards are also free for military personnel and their dependents with a copy of orders. The resident card replacement fee is $5.00. Resident library cards must be renewed every five years. There is no charge for the renewal.
