AUGUST 2015 NEWSLETTER
PROGRAMS @ KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY
KAIMUKI DASHBOARD
Curious about how "big" the library is? Starting with this month's issue, the newsletter will feature key performance figures of the library for the most recent month available, previous-year figures, and year-on-year change.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The Summer Reading Program (SRP) at Kaimuki Public Library came to a successful conclusion on Friday, July 17, after seven weeks of fun and incentives.
Kaimuki patrons did a great job of reading: a total of 979 people registered (Adult: 303; Young Adult: 109; Children: 567), and 8,996 titles were reported (Adult: 1,267; Young Adult: 804; Children: 6,925). Fourteen dedicated SRP volunteers devoted 213 volunteer-hours to registration and incentive awards.
The library hosted five programs with a combined attendance of 259: Super Power Story Time with Fairy Grandmother Susie Roth (83 attendees), Nostalgic Hawaiian Gift Bags craft workshop with Evelyn Nakamura (18), Slack Key Guitar with Danny Carvalho (102), Superhero Academy science activity by HouseMart Ace Hardware and Ben Franklin Crafts (42), and the How to Create a Superhero drawing workshop led by cartoonist Christopher Carvalho, creator of ‛Aumākua Guardians of Hawai‛i (14).
The library thanks you for your participation, its sponsors for their support, and the volunteers for their time. Be sure to sign up again next year!
Programs and incentives were Friends of the Library of Hawaii, the Friends of Kaimuki Public Library, and other community sponsors
STAFF UPDATE AND SUNDAY STORY TIME
Aloha to Miss Mysti! Children's Librarian, Melissa LePage will be leaving Kaimuki Library after August 14 to start working at Waikiki-Kapahulu Public Library as the Branch Manager. She started the popular Sunday morning story time at Kaimuki Public Library when she became the Children's Librarian in 2007.
Sunday Story Times will be on a break in August and start up again on September 13 at 10:30 a.m.
BOOK CLUB
Interested readers are invited to join the Kaimuki Public Library Book Club along with volunteers from the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and Friends of Kaimuki Public Library. There will be monthly discussion meetings on designated Friday mornings before the library opens from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Come to the library's front door on Koko Head Avenue before 9:30 to be let in. Participants are encouraged to borrow and read the books in advance. Scheduled book discussions are:
August 14: Thunderstruck (Erik Larson) -- HSPLS has print and CD audiobook formats.
September 11: A walk in the woods (Bill Bryson) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable) formats.
October 9: The lightning thief (Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Book 1) (Rick Riordan) -- HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable) formats.
DONATED MATERIALS
The library appreciates your generosity in donating books, many of which have great sentimental value to the donor. However, just as a store cannot sell a beloved stuffed animal that shows wear and tear, the library can consider only donations in very good or like-new condition for addition to the library collection or for sale at the Friends of Kaimuki Public Library book sale.
Every day, the library must discard dozens of well-intentioned donations that are yellowing, worn, mildewed, dirty or simply out-of-date. Sorting and disposing of these items costs the library time and funds. So before you donate, please look at each book through a stranger's eyes: would you pay $1 or $0.50 for it? Please kokua and follow the Friends of the Library Donation Guidelines.
COMPUTER TUTORIALS
Sign up at the reference desk for Friday-morning (10:00 a.m., 1 hour max) tutorials in essential computer use, e-mail, surfing the Web, Microsoft Office basics, or any other introductory computer-use topic of your choice. You need a valid HSPLS card to participate.
HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
The library will be closed on Friday, August 21 (Statehood Day), Sunday, September 6 (closed), and Monday, September 7 (Labor Day). From 5 p.m. on Friday, September 4, until 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8, books may be deposited in the main-entrance book drop in the Koko Head Avenue wall. The book and audio-visual drops in the rear parking lot will be locked, and there will be no CD or DVD return.
For book drop availability at other locations, please inquire with the appropriate branch.
