Spot the Ant, Stop the Ant -- at Selected Oahu Public Libraries
The Little Fire Ant (LFA), one of the world's 100 worst invasive species, infests yards, houses, farms and forests, and their powerful sting harms people and wildlife. Little Fire Ants sting the eyes of pets, leading to blindness, and they can damage crops, food production, and the economy everywhere they have spread.
In December 2013, Little Fire Ants were discovered in hāpu‘u logs at nurseries and garden shops on O‘ahu and Maui, and in landscaping on Lāna‘i. Much of the infested hāpu‘u sold to the public remains unaccounted for. Infestations have already been confirmed in Mililani and Waimanalo.
Governor David Ige will proclaim September 2015 as "Spot the Ant, Stop the Ant Month" this Friday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. Oahu public libraries located in communities vulnerable to LFA infestations will partner with the Oahu Invasive Species Committee (OISC) to provide two free educational programs and test kits for the community.
In the first program "Little Fire Ants in Hawaii," Oahu Invasive Species staff will present a 30-minute documentary produced by the Maui Invasive Species Committee that features videography from award-winning film makers Masako Cordray and Chris Reickert. The film examines the biology, impacts, and potential solutions to the spread of little fire ants through interviews with scientists, farmers, and community on the Big Island reeling from the impacts of this minuscule, but devastating ant.
Following the film, OISC staff will conduct a brief presentation and question-and-answer session. Free test kits will be distributed to participants.
Attend a "Little Fire Ants in Hawaii" program at the following seven Oahu libraries:
• Sept. 8 (Tuesday), 6:30 p.m. at Kahuku Public & School Library (ph. 293-8935)
• Sept. 9 (Wednesday), 6:30 p.m. at Waimanalo Public & School Library (ph. 259-2610)
• Sept. 16 (Wednesday), 6 p.m. at Kaneohe Public Library (ph. 233-5676)

• Oct. 3 (Saturday), 11 a.m. at Waialua Public Library (ph. 637-8286)
Contact the hosting library two weeks in advance if a sign-language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed. This program is suitable for ages 12 and older.
In the second program, testing for Little Fire Ants is critical. During the month of September, nine selected Oahu public libraries will assist the Oahu Invasive Species Committee by distributing free test kits AND serving as site drop-off locations for the returned kits. Testing is easy and instructions are included with each kit. See a video tutorial at vimeo.com/97558997. This program is suitable for ages 12 and older.
Interested participants can pick up and drop off test kits during September at these nine Oahu public libraries:

• Kailua Public Library
• Kaneohe Public Library
