PROGRAMS @ KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY
HAWAII DIGITAL NEWSPAPER PROJECT*
On Tuesday, October 20, at 6:30 p.m., Alice Kim will present on topics of interest from Hawaii newspapers in the Hawaii Digital Newspaper Project, a collection of Chronicling America, which provides free public access to digitized American newspapers published from 1836 to 1922. She will also demonstrate search strategies when using this newspaper database. Ms. Kim served as the graduate research assistant for the Hawaii Digital Newspaper Project and presently works as a digitization coordinator, instructor, and editor. Sponsored by Friends of Kaimuki Public Library.
PUPPET SHOW AND WORKSHOP*
On Sunday, November 8, at 10:30 a.m., Bonnie Kim will put on a 40-minute performance of two Korean animal folktales using shadow puppets and marionettes at the library. A 30-minute shadow puppet-making workshop will follow. Materials will be provided. Workshop registration for the first 20 in person or by phone starting October 18. Ages 4 and up. Children must be accompanied by adult. Sponsored by Friends of the Library of Hawai‛i.
Ms. Kim holds a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and teaches drama, puppetry, masks, creative dance, and recycle art for various arts organizations in Hawaii. She is a teaching artist on Artistic Teaching Partner roster with Arts Education Program of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts as well as an artist for the Statewide Cultural Extension Program with the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College
HAWAIIAN INSTRUMENT DISPLAY
During October, the library will be hosting a special exhibit on the ukeke in the Adult Reading Room glass display case. The ukeke, a musical bow, is the only stringed instrument indigenous to Hawaii. Mahalo to the Hawai‛i State Library Art, Music and Recreation Section for allowing Kaimuki to host this exhibit!
SUNDAY STORY TIME*
Storytimes are being held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. (except for holidays: see HOLIDAY SCHEDULE). Children through age 7 accompanied by an adult are welcome.
BOOK CLUB
Interested readers are invited to join the Kaimuki Public Library Book Club along with volunteers from the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and Friends of Kaimuki Public Library. There will be monthly discussion meetings on the second Friday morning of each month before the library opens from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Come to the library's front door on Koko Head Avenue before 9:30 to be let in. Participants are encouraged to borrow and read the books in advance. Scheduled book discussions are:
October 9: The lightning thief (Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Book 1) (Rick Riordan) -- HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable).
November 13: Good omens (Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and CD audiobook.
December 11: Orphan train (Christina Baker Kline) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and CD audiobook.
January 8: A spool of blue thread (Anne Tyler) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable).
FRIENDS OF KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY (FKPL) BOOK AND MEDIA SALE
On Friday, October 16, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., FKPL will hold a used book and media sale in the library basement on the ground level fronting Harding Avenue: hardcover books, CDs, and DVDs: $1.00; paperback books: $0.50; reusable canvas tote bags: $5.00 Free admission. General public welcome. FKPL members enter starting at 4:30 p.m.
FRIENDS OF KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Friends of Kaimuki Public Library will hold a meeting of the general membership on Monday, October 19, at 6:00 p.m., in the Young Adult Room. The meeting will be open to all interested individuals.
NATIONAL FRIENDS OF LIBRARIES WEEK
The week of October 18 is National Friends of Libraries Week. During that week, let's take the time to thank the Friends of Kaimuki Public Library (FKPL) board members and general members for their hard work in supporting the library and show our support by joining or volunteering.
Any time you use the stapler or tape, sit on an upholstered chair, or attend a library performance, remember the hard-working FKPL volunteers and officers (President Lori Yamada, Vice President Christina Tom, Secretary Jan Bullock, and Director Geraldine DeBenedetti).
COMPUTER TUTORIALS
Sign up at the reference desk for Friday-morning (10:00 a.m., 1 hour max) tutorials in essential computer use, e-mail, surfing the Web, Microsoft Office basics, or any other introductory computer-use topic of your choice. You need a valid HSPLS card to participate.

Please call the library 2 weeks prior to any library program to request a sign-language interpreter or other special accommodation if needed.

Library Cards
You may apply for a library card at any Hawaii public library. The initial card is FREE for Hawaii residents. Cards are also free for military personnel and their dependents with a copy of orders. The resident card replacement fee is $5.00. Resident library cards must be renewed every five years. There is no charge for the renewal.
