Noted Musicians Seek HPR's Intimate Live Concert Setting
Winter 2015-16 Season in Atherton Studio Announced during Fall Fund Drive
The Winter 2015-16 Season in Hawaiʻi Public Radio's intimate Atherton Studio features top musical artists from across the range of genres heard over HPR's two programming streams. Leading the line-up is an already sold-out, members-only "Musical Conversation" with R&B legend Booker T. Jones ("Green Onions," Booker T. and the MGs) on November 2. The evening is hosted by Dave Lawrence, local host of the NPR news magazine All Things Considered.
Other highlights of the season include, on December 12, Frank Sinatra's 100th birthday, a special concert by one of Hawaiʻi's most respected jazz performers (whose name must be withheld for contractual reasons). The set list for the evening will be determined by ticket purchasers, who will be asked to suggest their favorite Sinatra tune.
Returning to the Atherton to usher in 2016 is singer-songwriter Kuana Torres Kahele with music from his acclaimed CD series "Music for the Hawaiian Islands" on January 9. Later that month, jazz vocalist Karrin Allyson performs from her new and critically acclaimed CD (released in September 2015), "Many a New Day: Karrin Allyson Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein."
In February, Tony Trishchka, considered to be the most influential banjo artist in the roots music world, solos at the Atherton. And in March, Luke Trimble on guitar leads a string chamber music trio from the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra.
"The Atherton Studio has come of age," says HPR Community Outreach Manager Gene Evans, who doubles as the Atherton's producer. "Artists with major recording contracts and who have performed at the most prestigious venues before huge crowds are calling to ask us if they might perform in this 75-seat, acoustically perfect space on Kāheka Street. They tell us they want to return to what initially drew them to a career in music: the exploration of their instrument, sharing stories, and a personal connection with a thoroughly engaged audience."
Reservations for any of the Atherton Winter 2015-16 events may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Regular tickets are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. Special pricing applies for premium events. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m., unless otherwise noted.
