PROGRAMS @ KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY

BOOK BY HSPLS LIBRARIAN

Christin Lozano, Adult Reference Librarian at Kaimuki Public Library, has written and published in cooperation with illustrator Mariko Merritt, a Hawaii-themed children's picture book entitled Island Toes, which tells through pictures and words the variety of toes one can see (snorkeling toes, wheelchair toes, "straps-in-between" toes) and places they go. The publisher is Bess Press. The book is now widely available and will be coming soon to the public library. Also sold through the Friends of Kaimuki Public Library book store (see below). Congratulations, Christin!

SUNDAY STORY TIME*

The last storytime in the current series will be held on Sunday, December 6, at 10:30 a.m. The next series will start on Sunday, January 10. Children through age 7 accompanied by an adult are welcome.

BOOK CLUB

Interested readers are invited to join the Kaimuki Public Library Book Club along with volunteers from the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and Friends of Kaimuki Public Library. There will be monthly discussion meetings on the second Friday morning of each month before the library opens from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Come to the library's front door on Koko Head Avenue before 9:30 to be let in. Participants are encouraged to borrow and read the books in advance. Scheduled book discussions are:

December 11: Orphan train (Christina Baker Kline) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and CD audiobook.

January 8: A spool of blue thread (Anne Tyler) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable).

FRIENDS OF KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY (FKPL) BOOK STORE

Kick off the holiday shopping season with some bargain-priced books! FKPL will commence its book store operations in the east end of the library's basement every Tuesday starting December 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pricing will be the same as at the ongoing book sale inside the library (along the wall that parallels Koko Head Avenue), which will continue during library open hours: Paperbacks: $0.50 Hardcover: $1.00 Or priced as marked. (see below). Additionally CDs and DVDs will be sold for $1.00 each. Cash only, please.

COMPUTER TUTORIALS

Sign up at the reference desk for Friday-morning (10:00 or 11:00 a.m.; 1 hour max) tutorials in essential computer use, e-mail, surfing the Web, Microsoft Office basics, or any other introductory computer-use topic of your choice. You need a valid HSPLS card to participate.

Please call the library 2 weeks prior to any library program to request a sign-language interpreter or other special accommodation if needed.

WORLDWIDE VOYAGE EVENT AND ‘OHANA MOVIE NIGHT

On Monday, November 30, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., Kaimuki Public Library will host a two-part program in the Young Adult Room put on by the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) to share knowledge of the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage by the voyaging canoes Hōkūle'a and Hikianalia. The two parts to the program will be: 1) 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.: interactive educational activity stations including the star compass, knot tying, Mālama Honua voyage map, and peace flags. Crew members will oversee the activity stations. 2) 5:30-7:00 p.m.: showing of the documentary Papa Mau: the Wayfinder, which explores the influence of Mau Piailug, who revived non-instrument navigation in Hawaii and brought back Polynesia's voyaging tradition from the verge of extinction.

There is also a display of related photos and informational materials in the Adult Reading area's glass case, posters and items on top of the Young Adult Room book shelves, and books on top of the encyclopedia shelves in the Adult Reading area. The displays can be viewed through Friday, December 4.

This event and the display are being coordinated with PVS by Friends of the Library of Hawai'i.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

All public libraries will close for business at 5:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24 and New Year's Eve, Thursday, December 31. They will be closed on Friday, December 25, Saturday, December 26, Sunday, December 27, Friday, January 1, Saturday, January 2, and Sunday, January 3.

The bookdrops in the Kaimuki Public Library upper parking lot will be locked from 5:00 p.m. on December 24 and 31 through the weekends of Christmas (December 25, 26, and 27, 2015) and New Year's (January 1, 2, and 3, 2016). The book return by the front door will remain available for the return of books only. Library materials will not be due on the closure dates, so please wait until the library re-opens to return library materials. Thank you for your cooperation. Happy holidays!

Library Cards
You may apply for a library card at any Hawaii public library. The initial card is FREE for Hawaii residents. Cards are also free for military personnel and their dependents with a copy of orders. The resident card replacement fee is $5.00. Resident library cards must be renewed every five years. There is no charge for the renewal.
