Hawaii's Kids Vote "Smile" the Winner of 2016 Nene Award

"Smile" by Raina Telgemeier, a #1 New York Times bestseller, has been chosen by the children of Hawaii as the winner of the 2016 Nene Award. The announcement was made this morning by co-emcees Austin and Matthew Chun of Maryknoll, before an audience of more than 250 invited dignitaries, students, teachers, and other guests at the 52nd Annual Nene Award Presentation Ceremony at Consolidated Ward Theaters. The Nene Honor Book Award (runner-up) is "The One and Only Ivan" by Katherine Applegate.

Special guest speaker Mahealani Sims-Tulba, Miss Hawaii Junior Teen United States 2015-2016, and Founder and Creator of B.R.A.V.E. Hawaii (Be Respectful And Value Everyone), shared her experiences of being bullied and offered advice on how students can stop bullying in their schools. Sims-Tulba is also the author and illustrator of "It's Okay To Be Different."

The annual Nene Award is presented to the favorite fiction book based on a vote by the children of Hawaii in grades 4 through 6. This year, a total of 5,779 students from 70 public libraries and private and public schools statewide voted.

"Smile" is the Eisner Award-winning graphic memoir based on the author's childhood. Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader but one night after a Girl Scouts meeting, she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth. She not only has to endure a long and frustrating recovery period but must also overcome a major earthquake, boy confusion, and not-so-friendly friends.
