PROGRAMS @ KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY

SUMMER READING PROGRAM (SRP) 2016

Register and read at least 20 minutes per week at your reading level for the week and receive an incentive at the SRP desk for your age division. Keep it up for at least 4 of the 6 weeks, and receive a free book at the end of SRP!

You may register a pre-reader and read to him or her to claim age-appropriate prizes for the child. There will also be special events (see article below)!

Incentive awards and ongoing registration: Sunday, June 5 through Friday, July 15. This is the 6th & last week of the SRP.

On Your Mark, Get Set, READ! Activity Fair:

Wednesday, July 13, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Celebrate Summer Reading at our first-ever fair. Make crafts, pose for silly photos, draw, step into our reading vehicle, ship or rocket, listen to stories, and more!

Read-Along Thursday: each Thursday, from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m., parents or caregivers can drop by the Children's Room to read and play with their keiki! An array of books, coloring sheets, and puzzles will be out for use.

Family Film Friday: each Friday, starting at 2:30 p.m., a G- or PG-rated movie will be shown in the Children's Room. Last movie on Friday, July 15 is The Borrowers.

Divisions and Themes:

Adult: Exercise Your Mind Age 18 and up

Young Adult: Get In the Game Grade 6 through 12

Children: On Your Mark, Get Set…Read! Kindergarten through Grade 5

Early Literacy: On Your Mark, Get Set…Read! Birth-to-pre-K participants may have someone read to them to claim an age-appropriate incentive.

SUNDAY FAMILY STORY TIME*

Family story times featuring stories, rhymes, and crafts are being held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

*SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS: LIBRARY PROGRAMS

Please call the library 2 weeks prior to any library program to request a sign-language interpreter or other special accommodation if needed.=

BOOK CLUB

Interested readers are invited to join the Kaimuki Public Library Book Club along with volunteers from the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and Friends of Kaimuki Public Library (FKPL). Monthly discussion meetings are held on the second Friday morning of each month, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., (except Nov. 18 which is the third Friday). Meetings are in the FKPL book store located at the east end of the library's ground level. Participants are encouraged to borrow and read the books in advance.

Scheduled book discussions are:

Aug. 12 -- Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

Sept. 9 - Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua

October 14 - West With the Night by Beryl Markham

November 18 - The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin

No meeting in December.

FRIENDS OF KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY (FKPL)

MEMBERSHIP MEETING-

Tuesday, July 19 at 12 noon in the bookstore on the parking lot level. Current and new members are welcome to the meeting.

BOOK SALES

Revenue from FKPL book sales goes to help Kaimuki Public Library serve you with library events, library supplies, and more! You can get yourself some good reads economically while supporting a worthy cause in the following ways:

Weekly book store: FKPL's book store is open every Tuesday except holidays, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., in the east end of the library's basement/parking lot level: Paperbacks: $0.50, hardcover: $1.00 or priced as marked. Additionally CDs and DVDs are $1.00 each. Cash only.

Indoor book sale: the indoor book sale is located inside the library (along the wall on the Koko Head Avenue side) during library open hours with the same great prices as the book store. You can pay in the black box on the left side of the shelf. FKPL and the library thank you for your support!

COMPUTER TUTORIALS

Tutorials are held on Friday mornings (10:00 or 11:00 a.m.; 1 hour max) and cover essential computer use, e-mail, surfing the Web, Microsoft Office basics, or any other introductory computer-use topic of your choice. A valid HSPLS card in good standing is necessary in order to participate. Call to schedule an appointment in August or later.

Library Cards
You may apply for a library card at any Hawaii public library. The initial card is FREE for Hawaii residents. Cards are also free for military personnel and their dependents with a copy of orders. The resident card replacement fee is $5.00. Resident library cards must be renewed every five years. There is no charge for the renewal.
