Na Wao Ola A`o Pi`ilani (The Life Giving Forests of Maui) at Pukalani Elementary School / Calley O'Neill / stained glass mosaic / 2017 / Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawai`i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts

Na Wao Ola A`o Pi`ilani (The Life Giving Forests of Maui) at Pukalani Elementary School

Na Wao Ola A`o Pi`ilani, a stained glass mosaic mural by Calley O'Neill, was dedicated at Pukalani Elementary School on January 19, 2017. Pukalani Elementary School is in Makawao on the island of Maui, and the inspiration for this mural stems from the watershed of Haleakalā. Lilinoe -- goddess of the mists -- and the koa, `ōhi`a, and wiliwili share an important story: Life-sustaining water begins with trees. Haumāna (students) listen intently as these kumu (teachers) make a call to action: Restore the forest to create the clouds that produce rainfall, which fills the streams. Hahai nō ka ua i ka ulu lā`au. (The rain follows after the forest.) For this Art in Public Places -- Artists in Residence Program project, the artist, Calley O'Neill, was selected by an Art Advisory Committee, who also assisted with the selection of a location, the medium and theme of the work of art, and review of the design proposals. Pukalani Elementary School students and community members participated in making the mosaic tile border as part of the educational component, designed to include student and teacher participation in the conceptualization, design, construction, and installation of the commissioned work of art at the school.
