Poetry Out Loud: Hawai`i Student Places Second at Nationals

Hawai`i Student Places Second at National Finals

Hawai`i student Nicholas Amador placed second in the National Poetry Out Loud Competition in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, April 26, 2017. Nicholas recited "Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold, "Lions" by Sandra McPherson and "Windy City" by Stuart Dybek. The Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) congratulates Nicholas and Punahou School's Poetry Out Loud coordinator Lara Cowell for this prestigious achievement. The SFCA also thanks the Honolulu Theatre for Youth for their Poetry Out Loud partnership, which supports Hawaii's participation. Nicholas recently performed in the Punahou School production of Les Misérables as Jean Valjean, where he is a junior, and is a fan of musical theater. He wants to direct and write plays in the future.

This is the third time a Hawai`i student has placed in the top three nationally. Nicholas took third place in 2016, and former Mid-Pacific Institute student Kellie Anae took third place in 2006. The competition helped Anae earn a scholarship to Louisiana State University.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with U.S. state arts agencies (including Hawaii's State Foundation on Culture and the Arts) to support Poetry Out Loud, a free high school program that encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and and learn about their literary heritage.

SFCA Executive Director Jonathan Johnson says "at the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, we appreciate the way the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have made it possible to shine a light on the American tradition of poetry and recitation. As an island state, we value the next generation and their capacity to communicate accurately and clearly.

Partnering with the Honolulu Theatre for Youth is a wonderful example of how working with local organizations helps us expand our reach into all of the communities in our island state, and highlight the talent and hard work of our youth on a national stage. We are grateful for the hard work and dedication of the Honolulu Theatre for Youth and our shared mission to support arts and culture in Hawai`i.

We congratulate Nicholas Amador on his second place win and look forward to how he will use his public speaking skills in the future."

Terry Liu is a consultant for Hawai'i Arts Alliance, a statewide private non-profit that champions all arts. The Alliance represents 145 organizations and over one thousand individuals as the State Captain for the national arts advocacy organization, Americans for the Arts. Dr. Liu served the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) as Folk & Traditional Arts Specialist from 1990 to 1996 and NEA Arts Education Specialist from 2000 to 2016. From 1996-1999, Terry worked in a local arts agency in California, served on grants panels around the country, gave grant writing workshops, and assisted organizations seeking public and private support. Today, he manages the arts education applications review process. Dr. Liu was a violin major in college, earned a graduate degree in ethnomusicology from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, is an avid mariachi violinist, rock bass player, and an Usui Reiki Master Teacher.

Art in Public Places

Art at the Capitol

The annual Art at the Capitol event celebrated its ninth year with the theme of "Onipa`a: The Spirit of Lili`uokalani." The self-guided tour included viewings of a video about The Spirit of Lili`uokalani statue by Marianna Pineda and videos from past Art at the Capitol events. The Hawai`i Youth Symphony string quartet and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) Serenaders performed live during the event.

Art at the Capitol began in 2008 as Sen. Brian Taniguchi's initiative (developed during a conversation with a Hawai`i State Art Museum docent) to welcome the public to view the artworks displayed in the legislative offices as well as in the open areas of the State Capitol. More than 900 pieces of artwork in the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts' Art in Public Places Collection are on display in the State Capitol offices and open areas. In the first year of the event, the state Senate opened its doors after work hours and invited the public and artists whose work was on display. The following year, the House of Representatives joined, and in 2012, the Offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor began participating. In 2017, 50 legislative offices and the Offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor participated.

Earlier this year, a group of state legislators took a landscape drawing class in preparation for Art at the Capitol. Their drawings were displayed at the event, with prizes for the Judges Award and the People's Choice Award. The volunteer judges for the Judges Award were Sean O'Harrow (Honolulu Museum of Art), Katherine Tuider (Honolulu Biennial Foundation) and Pamela Young (KHON-TV). Senator Laura Thielen (Senate District 25 -- Kailua, Lanikai, Enchanted Lake, Keolu Hills, Maunawili, Waimanalo, Hawai`i Kai, Portlock) won the Judges Award, and Senator Gilbert Keith-Agaran (Maui, Senate District 5 - Wailuku, Waihe`e, Kahului) won the People's Choice Award. Prizes were gift cards to Artizen by MW, the Hawai`i State Art Museum's café, conveniently located across the street from the State Capitol.

Art at the Capitol is made possible by the office of Senator Brian Taniguchi, the Friends of the Hawai`i State Art Museum, and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA).

Recent and Upcoming Exhibit Visits

The HSFCA sent an Acquisition Award Selection Committees (AASC) to the AN AFFAIR OF THE ISLANDS exhibit at galerie 103 and the Art Maui 2017 exhibit at the Schaefer International Gallery, Maui Arts and Cultural Center in March, and Wall-Mounted Ceramics by Yoko Haar and Licia McDonald, the Honolulu Museum of Art at First Hawaiian Center; Paper Processes: Works by Denise Karabinus, Paula Nokes, and Nisha Pinjani, the Honolulu Museum of Art at First Hawaiian Center; and A Climate of Change at Kahilu Theatre (Kahilu Theatre Foundation) in April.

The role of the AASC is to make recommendations to the HSFCA regarding the purchase of works of art, including the review, nomination, evaluation and selection of the recommended artworks for acquisition. The AASC is generally composed of HSFCA commissioners, staff members, and visual arts consultants.

ACCESSION. A selection of recent additions to the Art in Public Places Collection from across the state of Hawai‘i. Through August 2017.

He Makana: The Gertrude Mary Joan Damon Haig Collection of Hawaiian Art, Painting and Prints. A distinguished collection of traditional Hawaiian crafts, paintings and prints presented to the state of Hawai‘i in honor of the life of Mary Joan Damon Haig. Through August 2017.

HAWAI‘I: Change & Continuity. This exhibit tells a story of the past examining the overlapping influences of nature's bounty and human impact on a fragile environment. This is a long-term exhibit and is currently scheduled to run beyond 2018.

Process Under Pressure. An exploration of traditional printmaking techniques. Opens on May 5, 2017.

Practical Advocacy for the Arts

The National Assembly of State Art Agencies (NASAA) has been publishing a Practical Advocate series, designed for state arts agency council members and grantees. Offering succinct guidance for promoting the community benefits of the arts, the most recent additions summarize talking points, debunking common myths regarding public support for the arts, and provide advocacy action recommendations (along with useful advocacy dos and don'ts). The Hawai`i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts is Hawaii's state arts agency and has a NASAA membership. Read more on the NASAA website

The Art in Public Places Program of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA) seeks volunteers, particularly on the Neighbor Islands, with expertise and knowledge in the visual arts field to serve as visual arts consultants on Art Advisory Committees and Acquisition Award Selection Committees.The role of the Art Advisory Committee is to make recommendationsto the HSFCA regarding the development and design of a given commissioned art project,including location, medium, distinguishing features of the artwork, and selection of theartist. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committees is to review and makerecommendations regarding the purchase of works of art. The HSFCA appoints thecommittee members -- generally composed of two HSFCA commissioners, two staff members,and three visual arts consultants. The Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (Friends of HiSAM) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization established to work effectively with the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA), which operates the museum, and its professional staff to enhance and support the work of the museum, its ancillary programs, and amenities.
