Human beings have been at the center of creative expression since the very beginning of the history of art. While this includes both genders, there has been more attention and scrutiny aimed at the female form. This exhibition of thirty-three works from the Art in Public Places Collection puts its focus solely on artistic depictions of men.

The museum cafe, Artizen by MW, and the museum gift shop, HiSAM Gallery Shop x MORI will also be open, with live entertainment including jazz music by the Dae Han Ensemble and a clay demo with Daven Hee, Jon Vongvichai, and Ashley Huang. Considered among the fastest wheel throwers in the state, ceramic artists Daven Hee and Jon Vongvichai will dazzle and amaze with how quickly they can create cups, bowls, and pots. Award winning ceramic artist Ashley Huang specializes in hand building animals and will bring clay to life right before your eyes by sculpting each beautiful piece by hand. The Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum will be hosting a bar with wine and beer. Valet parking is available at the Richards St. entrance to the building.

Artist Melinda Morey finds a commonality between hip-hop dance and surf cultures. Whether in a beach parking lot on Kauaʻi (where she grew up) or in an underground dance club in New York City: both scenes revolve around a public image, attitude and attire, and finally the activity itself.

Sculptor and painter Satoru Abe was born in Honolulu in 1926. Throughout his career, Abe has created visual expressions of the cycle of life -- growth, death, rebirth, and the human form. Abe simplified the head and torso into a block-like "silhouette" that suggests a seated figure in meditative stillness.

The 2018 Poetry Out Loud National semi-final and final round videos are now available to view online! Hawaiʻi State Champion Nicholas Amador's recitations can be viewed in Poetry Out Loud Semifinal 03 (his recitation begins at 40:04), and Poetry Out Loud Finals (Round 1, 32:20; Round 2, 1:08:43; and Round 3, 1:36:17).

National Arts in Education Week is September 9-15, 2018! The SFCA will be sharing stories about arts education work done by the SFCA and SFCA partners and grantees on social media with hashtags #artsedweek and #BecauseOfArtsEd. In 2018, the campaign is centered around the impact stories of arts education, especially the impact of arts education on individual lives. For more information: www.NationalArtsInEducationWeek.org

The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts provides arts education of State of Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) students K-12 through the following programs:

Art Bento Program @ HiSAM: A standards-based inquiry-focused museum outreach program for Oahu Hawai`i DOE Public and Public Charter Schools Grades 2-6.
Artists in the Schools (AITS): Public and charter schools statewide can apply annually for up to $6000 to bring a teaching artist to the school for an arts residency in drama, dance, music, visual art or literary art. Every year, about 12,000 K-12 students engage in active, joyful, creative learning through this program.
Professional Development for Educators: SFCA supports professional development (PD) in the arts for classroom teachers and teaching artists, through institutes, courses and workshops.For classroom teachers, the goal is to help them learn how to integrate the arts with other core subject areas.For teaching artists, the goal is to hone their teaching skills and to ensure that they are abreast of national trends and best practices in arts education.
Poetry Out Loud: National poetry recitation competition for high school students.SFCA is responsible for the state level competition which involves public, private, charter and homeschooled students from all islands.Students learn about their literary heritage by choosing, memorizing and performing classic and contemporary poems.They also build self-confidence and public-speaking skills.
Hawai‘i Regional Scholastic Art Awards at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HiSAM): This annual competition and exhibition recognizes creative excellence among Hawaii's public and private school students in grades 7-12, and is done in collaboration with the DOE and the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
Young Artists of Hawai‘i: formerly called the Hawai‘i Convention Center Student Art Exhibition, this annual exhibition is done in collaboration with the DOE, the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools, and the Hawaii Convention Center. Young Artists of Hawai‘i was established by the SFCA to provide opportunities for public and private school students K-6 to participate in a juried art competition and present their artwork in a professional setting.

Art in Public Places: It's Your Art

Recent visitors to the HAWAIʻI: Change & Continuity exhibit at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum included a group of participants from the Hawaii Health & Harm Reduction Center (HHHRC),a local non-profit agency providing services to the HIV, Hepatitis C, substance use, LGBQ, transgender, Native Hawaiian, and homeless population on Oahu, and Cullen Koshimizu, a Patient Navigator with HHHRC. They have kindly shared with us some information about their visit and what they experienced in the museum galleries. "While most of them do seek medical and behavioral health services, visiting the museum was another way to engage our participants outside of an office setting. This allows for them to be more social and not so isolated in the community." - Cullen Koshimizu

"We went directly into the gallery and stopped at John's painting which is the first, immediately to the right of the entrance.* I shared with our little group some background on John Thomas as an artist, the "Boy with Goldfish" collaboration and my part in it, and the Rainbow Falls painting in particular.As we parted in the lobby we all commented on how much we had enjoyed the experience, made the richer by us particular five. I really must do this again, soon."

*recent changes to the exhibit include changing out Rainbow Falls for Woman With Orchids #4, also by John Paul Thomas. The HAWAIʻI: Change & Continuity is currently scheduled to remain up through April 2020.

The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) is to make recommendations to the SFCA regarding the purchase of works of art, including the review, nomination, evaluation and selection of the recommended artworks for acquisition. The AASC is generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members, and visual arts consultants.

ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES ASSISTANT

TEMPORARY: The State Foundation on Culture and the Arts is seeking an Administrative Services Assistant. Please note that this is not a secretarial, clerical, or office support position. This position plans, organizes and coordinates administrative duties, assists in internal management, fiscal and personnel staff management. For the State of Hawai‘i, Administrative Services Assistant positions provide administrative support services to the administrator of a statewide program; participate in and coordinate program planning and evaluation; conduct special studies of operational and administrative problems; and perform other related duties as assigned. The Art in Public Places Program of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) seeks volunteers, particularly on the Neighbor Islands, with expertise and knowledge in the visual arts field to serve as Visual Arts Consultants on Art Advisory Committees and Acquisition Award Selection Committees.The role of the Art Advisory Committee is to make recommendationsto the SFCA regarding the development and design of a given commissioned art project,including location, medium, distinguishing features of the artwork, and selection of theartist. The role of the Acquisition Award Selection Committees is to review and makerecommendations regarding the purchase of works of art. The SFCA appoints thecommittee members for each exhibit visit -- generally composed of SFCA commissioners, staff members,and Visual Arts Consultants. The Hawai‘i State Art Museum (operated by the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts) is looking for enthusiastic, outgoing volunteers to assist museum visitors and help offer a greater understanding of the exhibitions currently on view. If you have an interest or background in the arts, we encourage you to volunteer.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

Gallery Attendant -- Assist visitors in the galleries.
Info Desk Attendant -- Greet and orient visitors to the museum.
Docent -- Conduct tours of the exhibitions.
Education Assistant -- Assist with education programs.
Special Events Assistant -- Assist staff in event coordination.
General Clerical Help -- Assist staff in office chores.

The Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (Friends of HiSAM) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization established to work effectively with the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA), which operates the museum, and its professional staff to enhance and support the work of the museum, its ancillary programs, and amenities.

In supporting the mission of the SFCA, the Friends of HiSAM have four objectives: (1) expose and engage all grade school students at the museumto the arts in Hawai‘i, (2) encourage all high schooland college students who are focused on the arts through meaningful events and programs at the museum (3) expose, excite, educate and engage those living in and visiting our state to the art and artists of Hawai‘i through visits to the museum, and (4) assist the SFCA in the recognition of Hawaii's art and artists. Most recently, Friends of HiSAM has hosted exhibits of local artists in the museum restaurant, Artizen by MW: Harry Tsuchidana: Forgotten Paintings; Across Generations, featuring Satoru Abe, Hamilton Kobayashi, and Kainoa Gruspe; Across Generations II, featuring Ka-Ning Fong and Erin Marquez; Yvonne Cheng: Recent Works; The 2017 HiSAM Portfolio Artists Show; Across Generations: Charles Higa and Michael Teruya; the Hawaii Master Artists Show; and Hawai‘i Artists 2018 Portfolio Project. Friends of HiSAM has also hosted a soft opening for the new museum shop, HiSAM Museum Gallery Shop x MORI.

The museum cafe and museum shop are independently operated under a lease agreement between the Friends of the Hawai‘i State Art Museum, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, and the State of Hawai‘i Department of Accounting and General Services.

Hawaii State Government Resources

The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) has released the 2017 edition of the "State of Hawaii Data Book."

The book is in electronic form and is available on the DBEDT website at: dbedt.hawaii.gov/economic/databook. The data may be downloaded in whole or in part as either PDF or Excel files.

The state's Data Book is the most comprehensive statistical book about Hawaii in a single compilation. With more than 800 data tables, classified into 24 sections, it covers a broad range of statistical information in areas such as population, education, environment, economics, energy, business enterprises, government, tourism and transportation.

"The Data Book is the most popular item on the DBEDT website, and this year marks the 50th edition," said DBEDT Director Luis P. Salaveria. "DBEDT researchers collected and compiled data from all private and public sources about all aspects of Hawaii and put them together to create this comprehensive source of information for anyone who wants to know Hawaii."

Section 7, Recreation and Travel, includes information on Performing Arts, Symphony Orchestra Activities, and Attendance at Museums and other Cultural Attractions.

The Statewide Cultural Extension Program (SCEP) is a part of the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa Outreach College, and offers the artistry of international national, and local artists and cultural experts to communities across the state. Programs range from The Art of Cartooning to Taiko Drumming and are usually offered in conjunction with co-sponsoring organizations such as libraries, schools, senior centers, nursing homes, parks, prisons, and community centers. Interested groups in the community may request performances, lecture-demonstrations, workshops, and residencies from SCEP's roster of artists and cultural experts. This program is supported by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaiʻi and by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The musuem is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed State and Federal Holdays. Always free admission. For pre-recorded information call 586-0900.
