Trees for Kaimuki - City Support! (We Hope)

The LIDAR data (NOAA, 2013) shows that Kaimuki's tree canopy coverage is 17% compared to the average of 22% for the entire southern area of Oahu. Between 2009 and 2013 the canopy loss was 1.7%. Given the city's initiative (Resolution 18-55) to increase our urban canopy to 35% our neighborhood has quite a long way to go.

But we have some good news - we met with our council members about our long term effort for Tree planting for Kaimuki and they are very positive. We hope they will be able to support this major effort for the long term. We are moving forward to zero in on the exact boundaries, refining the budget and starting the planning for the training for taking the inventory of our city trees. There may also be opportunities for reaching out to private residents to encourage them to plant more trees on their property if possible.

Our first training session for Citizen Foresters will be on four Mondays in April - April 1st, April 8th 8am-noon, April 15th and April 22nd 8am-10am.
